Lindsay - let's talk travel plans!

Are you getting excited?? What's on your agenda? I've also been meaning to ask what lenses you're bringing with you? I keep looking at my camera bag and wondering if I should take it all, it seems so bulky and touristy. Shoes? Did you get new kicks? Two weeks out and suddenly all I can think about is the trip!

Re: Lindsay - let's talk travel plans!

  • EEEK!  I know!  We leave on 4/13.  I can't wait.  Today, I'm spending my time pulling together stuff for my mom so she knows how to get around town, how to get into the city, things to do with Mucho, etc.  We need to start spending some time thinking about what we are going to do in the cities.  We'll spend the most time planning Barcelona, since we are staying there the longest and its the most to see.  We've already booked our tour of the Alhambra.  My husband works with some folks from Portugal, so he's got some reco's for our stops in Lisbon & Porto.  All the other places, we may just do some "play it by ear" since they are smaller.  We seem to have fun when we just kind of go and get lost for a day.  Adam needs to downloads the Euro maps into our GPS since we will be driving most of the trip.  Actually, I will be driving most of the trip since he is inexperienced with a manual.

Cameras:  oh LAWSY, I want to spend MONIES.  But I won't :(  We paid off student loans with bonuses this year.  Adam says he could buy me a new D700 (since I used all my bonus money paying off my MBA...only $4k left on that bad boy woohoo!).  But that would mean he goes to Spain alone.  No bueno.  Plus I think of the worst case scenario....say the thing gets stolen.  If I've got a new camera, I've got a big old sad face.  If I've got my old camera, I'm a little sad then a lot happy.  I only have two lenses right now, my 50mm prime and my 18-135 3.5-5.6 zoom, neither were super spendy and I wouldn't be heartbroken if they got stolen or destroyed.  The latter (and the body obvs) had an unfortunate meeting with pavement not to long ago.  So I'm definitely taking it to get serviced/cleaned before we go.  (Sidenote:  my to do list is growing and the timeline is shrinking!!)  But I am very tempted to upgrade the zoom lens as I think I have enough bonus money leftover to maybe get a 24-70 2.8, which would be awesome.  Do you have any off brand glass, Sigma or Tamron??  I know you get what you pay for, but they are so much more affordable it's tempting.

I really need to get new shoes.  My standby Nike mary jane slip ons in black and brown are beat to shiit.  I need some comfy walking shoes that don't scream TOURISTA.  I was looking at some Clarks on Zappos, and found some reasonably cute ones but the reviews were shaky on the comfy factor.  If you have any ideas, please share.

Clothes, I think I'm in OK shape.  I need to start tracking the weather more closely.  Layers will be the theme of my suitcase.  I'm loathe to spend a bunch of money on clothes, because I need shoes, I want camera gear, and I'm hoping I get knocked up shortly so anything I buy is going to have a limited shelf life (hopefully!)

    What are your plans?

  • Good call on starting to outline things for your mom, I would have left that till last minute and then worried the whole trip that I forgot something. Maybe I'll start that during naptime today. My mother is so excited, it's making this whole process so much easier for us. She's lined up so many outings for them while we're gone, they're not going to want us to come home.

So, Orthodox Easter falls at the beginning of our trip, so we had to reverse things a bit to make sure we're able to hit all the monuments and museums when they're open. We land in Athens on Thursday and have the day to explore the Acropolis and museums. Then we fly to Santorini in the morning and spend the weekend there. We have no plans other than to wander around and catch the sunsets. I've jotted down the names of a few 'must see/do' beaches & restaurants, but we're like you and have the most fun getting lost in the day and just doing whatever comes our way. We fly back to Athens on Sunday night, Monday morning starts our Peloponnese trip. We're signed up with a tour group, which we've NEVER done before, so hopefully it's a good experience. This is the description:

DAY 1: Leave by the coastal road for the Corinth Canal (short stop). Drive on and visit the theatre of Epidaurus, famous for its remarkable acoustics. Then proceed to the town of Nafplion (short stop), drive on to Mycenae and visit the archaeological site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Then depart for Olympia through the central Peloponnesus and the towns of Tripolis and Megalopolis. Dinner and overnight in Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic Games.

DAY 2: In the morning visit the archaeological site with the Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the ancient stadium and the archaeological museum. Then drive on through the plains of Ilia and Achaia and over the magnificent cable stayed bridge which crosses the Corinthian Bay from Rion to Antirion. Pass by the picturesque towns of Nafpaktos (Lepanto) and Itea, arrive in Delphi. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3: In the morning visit the archaeological site and the museum. Depart for Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing rock formations of Meteora. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: Visit Meteora. Amidst striking scenery, perched on huge rocks which seem to be suspended in mid-air, stand ageless monasteries where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. Return to Athens via Trikala, Lamia, Thermopylae (visit the monument of Leonidas). Arrive in Athens early in the evening.

We have one more night in Athens and then we fly home on Friday afternoon.

Shoes have definitely been on my mind. I'm going to try and pack light on this trip even though we're going to be there for 10 days... We've never moved around so much on a trip, so I don't want to be lugging a sh!t ton of bags everywhere. And considering our itinerary, I don't think I'll be needing heels, so I'm trying to find a cute, Euro looking shoes that won't break my feet and that I can dress up for dinner, too. Impossible. Almost...  I found these Naturalizers and they seem to get rocking reviews, I ordered them on Friday and they should be here tomorrow. They didn't have my exact, normal size, and after reading hundreds of reviews I was at a complete loss if I should buy bigger, wider, smaller, or more narrow. The reviews all ran together after awhile. So, I'm anxious to see if they fit so I can start breaking them in. http://www.zappos.com/naturalizer-creston-black-leather If they don't, I'm back to square one and looking for suggestions. I was looking at Merrells, Clarks, ECCO... but I want something that I'll wear at home, too. I don't care how comfortable some of those shoes are, they're butt effing ugly.

I'm going to stay away from buying new clothes... jfdghdkfghdfl yeah right. I'm sure I'll be sneaking a few things in. But, I have no plans to buy specific travel gear other than shoes... Maaaaaaybe a camera bag that doubles as a purse? Or, maybe I'll just look into buying an insert for one of my bigger bags and pretend that I bought a Kelly Moore bag.

I have a few lenses, two of them off brand. I have a Quantaray 28-200 3.8-5.6 for an old Nikon SLR that I use with an adapter ring for my Canon. It's a pain because I lose all my auto focus and functions. I end up needing a lot of color correction OOC when I use that lens, I hardly ever use it. I might leave it at home. I also have a Rokinon 8mm fisheye 1:3.5 that's fun, but pretty limiting as far as travel photography. Then I have my kit lens and my nifty 50. I don't even know what I want, so I should probably stop thinking about it. But if you want to plant some seeds in my mind garden, go ahead.

Spain and Portugal are on my list, I'm so excited about your trip and to see all your pictures. I know they're going to be fabulous!

  • You guys should ask Ali about shoes. I know she was looking for comfy, cute, non-touristy shoes for Israel. I forget what she wound up with but I think she was happy with them.

  • Good call on asking Ali, Moo.

Hezz, this is the one I'm considering:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/596258-REG/Sigma_571306_24_70mm_f_2_8_IF_EX.html

The effective length of it on my Nikon DX body will be 36-105, which seems like a perfect all purpose lens for travel and taking pictures of my little monster.  I'm lusting after something faster than my current zoom lens, even though I'll be giving up some of the long range vs. my current zoom.

We are likewise itching to go to Greece (our decision was down to Greece or Spain/Portugal), so I would like your crib notes from your trip too, por favor.  I think you are probably wise to get into a tour group.  Some places warrant it, and I would think Greece is on that list.  We also want to go to Israel at some point, but we'll do it with kid(s) when they are older and when we can afford to get some private tour guide treatment, I think.

  • I hate you both right now!  (Unless Lindsay gets a new camera and gives me her old one as my birthday present.  Then I only hate Hezz.)

  • Jealous all around. Sounds amazing! Maybe I'll plan a trip to Canada: America's Fart (TM Fenton)

  • Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in the world.  You will love it!

Are you architecture buffs at all?  I would recommend all of Gaudi's stuff.

I know lots of people that love Privo shoes for traveling.
