how to de-grease stove top grates & BBQ

We have a gas stove with the enamel grates on top.  I wash them, soak them, have used abrasive cleansers, etc. and they still feel greasy/sticky to me (we use a splatter screen for greasy food too).  Any good cleansers/tricks to get them clean?  I'd love to also use it on my bbq grates this spring too.  Those could really use a good clean.

Re: how to de-grease stove top grates & BBQ

  • I've laid mine out on the deck on newspaper and hit them with Easy Off Oven Cleaner - same way I would do the oven racks if that makes sense.
  • If you have a dishwasher, run them through a complete cycle on the bottom rack. Thats how I clean mine. But the oven cleaner hint is good too, if you dont have a dishwasher.
  • Thank you!  I will try the dishwasher first and if that doesn't work, oven cleaner on the deck it is.  Brilliant!

  • I use the Easy Off Grill cleaner.
  • Possibly the single most effective cleaning trick I have ever learned: put each grate in a large ziplock bag with a quarter cup of ammonia. Leave overnight. The next morning all of the build up should easily clean off with a sponge and warm soapy water.

Doing this, I managed to make my 7-year-old, never-properly-cleaned grates look brand new.

  • Ive used the ammonia trick on my oven racks, in a large black trash bag. Clean as a whistle.
  • Hi. I use Easy Off as well.

For the grill, I use a squeezed lemon and rub the grill with it. The grease comes off on the lemon.
