s/o Diverse casting--HBO American Gods NPCER
The Hunger Games thread made me think of this, hopefully there are some other Gaiman fans around...
HBO is developing an American Gods series and I'm very worried that they're going to cast the lead character wrong. He's specifically written as mixed race and during the course of the book asked if he's AA, Mexican, has 'gypsy blood' or is Native American.
If they cast a white man, I am going to be so annoyed. There are a bunch of blogs speculating on the casting now and at least half of them are talking about white actors.
Re: s/o Diverse casting--HBO American Gods NPCER
I would think it depends how much involvement Neil Gaiman has in the series. If he's involved, I think it would be hard for HBO to screw that up.
I don't know how many sci-fi fans we have on here but does anyone remember when SyFy did a spin off of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books? SyFy cut her out of the process and the majority of the cast was white when, in her books, she very explicitly wrote all of her characters as people of color. She was excoriating in all of her interviews on the topic.
Also, what's with HBO going all sci-fi/fantasy lately?

He has confirmed he's writing the first episode. Hopefully he'll have some say in casting as well.
On the bright side, he said the series has inspired him to write another American Gods book. So no matter what, we'll get that out of it.
I know he can't act, but in my mind Shadow is Dwayne Johnson.
Yeah, they made good Ursula LeGuin stuff into what amounted to their basic Knights of Bloodsteel fare. It was suboptimal.
That's how I pictured him, too. He's pretty much the perfect Shadow, physically.
I'd like The Rock as Shadow, too.
1. I didn't know AG was coming to TV. Kickass.
2. I'm not feeling Wentworth Miller.
3. The Rock--aesthetically, yes. However, I still think he's kind of ridiculous, which may ruin it for me.
