Playing with Gum Paste

I'm making my first foray into the world of gum paste decorating next weekend for the Munchkin's first birthday party.  How far in advance can I start?  Any tips for not ending up with melted gum paste radishes falling off in the middle of  "Happy Birthday"?  :D

Re: Playing with Gum Paste

  • You can start weeks in advance when it comes to gumpaste.

Not sure what you mean about gumpaste "radishes" but just make sure your gumpaste is not to dry when working with it. Rub shortening on your hands but not to much. You dont want your gumpaste to gummy and shiny. Also if you are making figures put powdered sugar in a bowl and cover the sugar with saran wrap. Place your figures in there to prevent them from flattening while drying. The powdered sugar provides a "pillow" effect.

    Have fun and good luck!

  • Thank you!  I'll have to get some shortening; I don't use it often, so I haven't got any at the moment.  I hadn't heard to use powdered sugar to keep figures from drying flat, but that makes total sense.

Our son's favorite show (in the sense that he grins and bounces along to the theme song the most) is Fraggle Rock, so that's my theme for the cake -- I'm going to do radishes around the edges and maybe a Doozer or Fraggle in the center, if I get really, really ambitious.

    A Doozer:

  • ahhh ... that should be fun! Yes.. you will defiantly need to make the sugar pillow in the bowl to keep that head round before attaching!

I would love to see pics when you finish!

  • Don't worry, if these turn out even semi-decently, I'll be posting pictures for sure!  I'm going to be getting started on them here in a little bit, actually.

I love the Wizard of Oz cake in your sig, by the way.
