Do you have an opinion on the Pink Slime debate?

So I'll admit in advance, that I have pretty limited knowledge on this subject. I did not read all the information that came out last week.

With that said, I'm not thrilled with the idea that it could be in the meat I buy without me knowing it. I'm also not thrilled with what goes into it. But on the flip side, I'm not a big fan of E-Coli either and I recently read that it helps lower the incidents of E-Coli. So.... What say you? Where do you stand on it?

  • I guess I've not heard of the pink slime debate... and I am pretty up on current event type things? so maybe I've just been missing out?

  • After reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, I pretty much assume I don't want to know what I'm eating.  The pink slime thing didn't even cause me to bat an eyelash.

I had speech class yesterday (woohoo) and someone presented a speech on the pink slime thing. She said that eating grass-fed beef (so basically organic) instead of corn-fed cuts down/out E-Coli. Something about how the fact that they're eating a corn-fed diet instead of the natural grass-fed diet is why E-Coli even becomes present.

Idk if she actually knew what she was talking about though. We're trying to switch to a more organic diet anyway so this whole thing is just more of an incentive to do it.

Yeah, I'm pretty much of the opinion that ignorance is bliss when it comes to what I'm eating.  It does gross me out to think about eating the pink slime when they show it on tv.  But I also used to think the same things when I first heard about what was in hot dogs, and the are still one of my favorite summer foods.

  • It grosses me out, but I am not surprised after watching "Food Inc." I don't eat a lot of meat anymore, especially red meat. Some of the living conditions that these animals face are horrifying; it is no wonder that their meat has to be treated with this crap. And, while I love the government, I do not have to always trust what they say is okay for me.

  • I can't even get through these replies without gagging...so I know I'm not going to be able to get through the article.

Is this an additive that meat companies are putting into ground beef?

I agree with you completely about the living conditions. I used to be a vegetarian, but my body didn't react well to that diet, I started losing a ton of hair even after making adjustments to how I was getting protein. But that was my main reason for being a vegetarian was because of the treatment of the animals at these mass farming places.

From what I know (again admittedly not a lot) it's a filler that has ammonia in it which is supposed to help kill e-coli, and make beef cheaper by adding a filler to it.

Knowing this is extra incentive to check out the local butcher in town.

Our 'local butcher' gets all his meat imported from the midwest where I assume it's treated the same way. I think I need to find some farmer that wants to sell me a cow! Just the cow please, nothing else.

Yep. And the fact that I can't do ground beef without gagging helps me sleep at night. I only eat chicken if I eat meat at all which is pretty darn rare these days.

  • It's not just beef. Any factory farmed animal is going to come with increased risk of disease. Vote with your dollars and know your farmers to the extent possible. Go local. If you haven't watched Food Inc, King Corn, and The Future of Food, you need to. Being squeamish isn't an excuse not to. You deserve to know what your money is getting you and you need to know that factory farming comes with overuse of antibiotics and hormones. Antibiotic resistance, anyone? Puberty at the age of 7?  Our food plays a role in that.

    Yes

If you read the fine print, chicken is injected (up to 15% of the weight) with a solution.  Because they process the chicken so much, it loses it's chicken flavor.  The injection is to restore some of that flavor and the moisture that was removed during the processing.

    Oh disgusting.

  • That "solution" is mostly sodium.  My dogs are on a raw diet, so I have to soak their chicken in water overnight to do a reverse brine of sorts to get that sodium out.

I can't remember if it's Food Inc or another documentary, but the treatment of poultry is really nasty.  Mike Rowe did an episode on Dirty Jobs about it.  Those chickens/turkeys are so crammed into their pens they trample each other and then eat the dead ones.  They're being bred to have breasts that are way too big for them to support (because people want white meat).  They're like Dolly Parton birds.  It impairs their ability to walk.

Animals that are raised eating what they're naturally supposed to eat are far healthier for us to eat.  I read that if all you do is switch from corn fed beef to grass fed beef, without changing your serving sizes or consumption frequency, the average American would lose 12lbs in a year.  The fat/marbling in the meats isn't even comparable.  Chickens that are raised eating what they're naturally supposed to eat, rather than corn, have much healthier levels of omega fatty acids in their eggs.  Same goes for dairy cows (ETA: Not that dairy cows lay eggs, just that the milk fat is healthier and raw milk isn't as scary when it's from a grass fed cow as it would be from a cow that's on a random diet of corn and whatever else is cheap and available).

Even if you don't care about the health effects of the food you consume, factory farming is extremely damaging to the environment and those farmers aren't exactly being treated well by the companies who own them.  Something like 80% of the chicken sold in stores is somehow owned by Purdue, which makes you wonder why they're priced differently at the store.  Most of them are the exact same thing.

Fish is about to get really scary.  Farmed fish is bad enough.  We're in for a wild ride with Frankenfish.

I'm just going to "this" everything Ojo said.

Ditto. Ignorance should absolutely not be bliss when it comes to the food going into your body. What you eat has everything to do with how you look, feel, think, act, everything! I know it's hard to eat completely clean all the time, but at least just be aware of what your food is comprised of and the impact it has.

  • If you're grossed out by the whole pink slime issue, you should stop eating all standard beef in this country since it's all treated the same way.

  • Another reason I want to go back to my basically vegetarian lifestyle and eating habits that I had before marrying E.

I'm going to be purchasing our meet from a local farmer at our farmer's market from now on.
