S/O Feeling Safe on Your Fave Route

As mentioned a few times in the favorite route post, it can be a little bit scary to run/cycle by yourself. What safety precautions do you take?

I always have my iPhone, as it has my music & run keeper. I also wear a Nathan's emergency contact bracelet, and have my emergenc y contact info in my fuel belt. I also keep a small canister of pepper spray in my fuel belt or jacket pocket.

I live in a moderately high crime area, but maybe I'm too paranoid. I would love to hear if any of you have any other methods/ideas.

Maybe stealth ninja capabilities is what I'm lacking ;). You're right about no music. I keep mine on low, as I really lose the plot without it. No music would be best, though.

  • I live in the downtown portion of my city and my path is two blocks from my apartment.  I don't like running with my cell phone (which I suppose is a major faux pas, but I often go out without my phone - running or not).

I only run during the daylight and when my path has plenty of other people on it.  I would never go down there early in the morning or after dark.  Ever.  This means that it's my path only during daylight savings time.  During the winter, I run indoors.

The path does not cross a road, but is incredibly close to several tourist attractions where I can always hail a cab home if I get hurt.  I actually think I'm far safer on that path than in many other places I have to go in my city.

  • I always try to vary my route from day to day.

I always try to vary my route from day to day.

I need some variation, but my normal route is so darn convenient that I never end up making a change. Do you vary your route for a particular safety reason, or just to keep things fresh?

  • I don't run outside when it's dark.  I have ID/Emergency Contact in my water bottle.

I always tell DH my planned route and my expected time away.  If I'm going to be longer than 90 minutes or so, I will make DH come and check on me while I'm out.

Both really, but running the same route at the same time every time is definitely a safety no no. You don't want anyone to be able to predict your habits. I started doing this in my old neighborhood, which was less safe than my current one.

  • I live in a very safe rural area, but I do bring my phone and tell my husband where I am going.  I also only run with one earbud in so I can still hear out of my other ear.
  • No music.
    Brightly colored clothing.

I always tell DH where I'm going and approximately how long I'll be gone. He knows he can always call me and vice versa. I don't "make" him check on me, but if he feels the need (like if it's 80+ outside when I start or otherwise schitty weather) I always answer.

    I bring my own water.

I bring/wear my phone. I always fully charge it the night before.

I run on a trail that is pretty well trafficked.

I have a runnerID bracelet that has my vital contact and medical info on it.

And generally, I am pretty vigilant. I lived on the south side of Chicago for 4 years so I've got some practice in that "stranger danger" Spider Sense.

  • I always carry my phone, and I have a Road ID on my shoe with emergency phone numbers.  I never ride with an iPod, and stay very alert.

I've only been scared once by a group of people who were a bit menacing when I went by.

  • I live in a pretty safe place too.  95% of the time I run in residential neighborhoods, so there's usually a lot of people either outside or driving by, kids out playing, etc. so I feel pretty safe that there would be someone around to hear me if I needed help.

Also, I wear my Road ID bracelet, *usually* take my phone with me, and I always tell my hubby where I'll be and about how long I'll be gone.

  • Make sure someone knows where you're going/what route you're taking.

    Don't wear headphones/ear buds.

Carry your phone and ID (DH even carries his insurance card).

Change up your route, don't just take the same one every day.

Stay in well-populated neighborhoods and in well-lit areas.

High visibility: wear bright/light colors, reflective strips, clip-on blinky lights, etc.

This is me completely! I text/call/tell my H when I leave and how long it should take, he knows which route I'm taking, and I make sure I let him know when I return. Also... I don't go far if he is not nearbye (i.e. home, his shop, or within a few minutes of either).

  • I can't run without music so I'll usually have one earbud in and the other one I tuck into my sports bra strap.

At night I try and wear bright clothes and I have a blinky light that I attach to my tunebelt.

I usually carry pepper spray at all times and I alternate routes.  I try and let DH know what route I'm taking in case it takes me longer than anticipated on that route.  He usually knows about how long each route takes me.

  • I always run with my cell phone.  I also always map my route on mapmyrun.com and leave it up for DH so he knows where I should be.  I also always tell him where I'm going, how far, and about how long I'll be gone.  I also have several routes (all through neighborhoods) that I like to run depending on the length.  I read somewhere that it's not good to run the same routes at the samet times and days.  That way, no one knows when you'll be where if they're planning an abduction.  If I had a local trail that was busy I always used, I wouldn't bother with that part.

  • If I'm running outside, there's someone at home to watch my son.

So, I just tell them where I'm planning to run and how long it should take me.

    That's it.
