Ugh sickness!

So part of last week I ended up being home since Mckenzie got RSV! Thankfully my uncle who works 28 days on and off 14 days just got home after she was initially diagnosed with broncolitis. Thankfully he willingly offered to come take care of her!

Poor thing has been sick a lot.  Last year it was multiple ear infections and last September she got tubes in, no ear infections since then! ::Knocks on wood::

But since then she has had roseola, mild case of pneumonia, croup (several times),  broncholitis, regular colds, and I'm sure I've missed a few things.

She and another little boy in her room got RSV, the little boy ended up becoming very lethargic and spiking high fevers so they hospitalized him, my understanding is he is doing better and I think may have gone home over the weekend.

Today when I picked her up I was told 2 kids with fevers in her room were sent home early.  One parent apparently didn't come for several hours to pick their child up who's fever was up to 104! Yikes! Its a bit frustrating since I feel like I follow the illness policy, and it sucks missing work but its annoying to hear other parents are apparently not following their illness policy.

Any suggestions on how you would handle this? I know she is going to get sick in general but seriously its been one thing after another!

Part of me wanted to suggest they reiterate their illness policy but I know there will always be those parents who completely disregard them, just not sure what to do! If anyone has any suggestions on ways to keep a child in daycare from catching everything?? I am still breastfeeding and giving her vitamins, as her pedi suggest I continue BF'ing as long as I can and at least through spring to help.

Re: Ugh sickness!

  • I have no suggestions, but I know that when a fever, flu, RSV, or lice is discovered in the classroom at my boss's kid's schools they get a text notification so that they can pick up their kids if they want to. They're a private school, which I assume the daycare is so I'd think they could maybe set up something like that via text or email without breaking any confidentiality stuff.

  • The last place I worked at had an email notification system for things like pink eye, flu, multiple kids sick, etc. We had a good few months when we had rotating illnesses (pink eye, then bronchitis, then flu, then bronchitis again). Two parents refused to admit their kids had pink eye, so we ended up with probably 6 staff getting it. Same thing with kids with fevers. It was ridiculous.

There's not a lot you can do other than keep her as clean as possible at home. Maybe give her a mini bath right when she gets home and change out of her "school" clothes to reduce continued exposure to whatever it going around?

    Ugh how annoying!

That is a great idea about changing her clothing, I usually don't change them until bath/PJs later in the evening.  I am going to start doing the!

They do have text notification with illness and then a health board when you walk in to notify you of any known illnesses.  The daycare center is a privately owned center, and the owner is very involved.  Honestly I just feel likes its a few parents just disregarding and respecting the daycare's illness policy.  It seems that they don't understand by them sending their child when ill, and they are well aware they should probably keep them home.  I guess one of the kids that had a fever yesterday was not picked up for several hours and the parents asked them to give tylenol.  I believe their policy is that you must pick them up within 30 minutes of being called.  We're in an area that you can be in surrounding areas and be there in about 30 mins.

I want to talk to the daycare but its not my business, however my child has seriously got the brunt of all the illnesses, I know she's going to get sick being at daycare, but I just don't know how to address it.

I know if I were in her shoes I'd be having a frank discussion with the parent that did not get their child until several hours later.  That parents is well aware of 2 children having RSV, and knows that 1 child was hospitalized (and still is).  That parents needs to understand that there is a reason for the illness policy and frankly if they don't like it maybe they need to explore other options.  I know that isn't very nice to say but I don't think they should be letting parents get away with being so lax on the policy.

  • No suggestions here. Little people get sick b/c they are around so many other little people. In my experience with little people in my life, they grow out of getting sick easily. In time.

  • Part of it unfortunately is those parents employers are not symathetic and there may have been something that parent HAD to do at work in order to not get in trouble of their boss said if they left before a certain time they'd get in toruble...it sucks but that happens at a lot at A's daycare.

Also remember that daycare ALWAYS adds 1 degree up but 104 it still would've been 103. I know when I get a call I normally have to finish up what I was doing and print things off for the next day so I normally tell them it'll be about 20-25 minutes before I can leave and then it takes me 30 if it's a good driving day.

They did inform us with a letter when another room got RSV (and had brought a little girl over to A's room and they don't want to admit but because they said she didn't have RSV but how in the world did A and another boy in her room get it if they are wwaaaaaaaay far away from the other rooms). And I took that to heart.

She had an ear infection but I told the doc that RSV was going around and he tested her (you have to bring it up or they won't do it) and sure enough she had it but very early on. I then told her teacher who told the director and the little boy in her room who had the same symptoms as A they told her she should get him tested but can't force her...she didn't listen for a couple days (over the weekend) well guess what he ended up with pnemonia and what she tried saying was RSV like symptoms but I know he had it she just didn't want to admit that they told her to have him tested...that's irritating because he could've come back with it and gotten A and the other boy sick all over again.

I noticed that when I weaned A that's when she started to get sick more often. Two ear infections in about 5 weeks which is a lot for her. I feel bad for your little M because that's a lot for that poor girl. The only other option you may have to look into is finding another daycare.  I know that's not a great solution but sometimes they just can't force the parents to get their children or have them tested for things if they don't have a fever or they could always just say they'll get there as soon as they can which could be hours either by choice or not you know...

  • This has been a horrible year for all the illnesses. This is just what happens with little kids in daycare. Just try to keep things as clean as you can at home so things aren't spread.

  • That is terrible! Alessandra gor RSV back in Feb. and I seriously took her to the drs 4 times in one week. I couldn't stand hearing her cough and that nasty congestion she had. It just worried me to death (and I've worked with kids that were constantly congested in the past. Very diffrent when it's your own kid.) Not sure how Alessandra got the RSV since she doesn't go to day care and stays at her grandmas every day but things happen. I hope M gets over all this soon. All I can tell you is to teach her the importance of hand washing and talk to the day care teachers to see is they follow the whole hand washing thing.
