I feel sort of bad for telling a lady to keep it down at the gym...

Mostly I'm shocked that I had the balls to say something to her.  This lady was walking on the treadmill and talking so loudly she was louder than the gym music.  Several other women were side eyeing her and I assumed equally annoyed.  After about 30 minutes of her ridiculous non-stop chatter I asked her to keep it down or please take her conversation outside.  I said I was having difficulty focusing on my workout.  Would you have done the same or wanted to?  I feel so rude but she was driving some of us nuts!

  • That's ballsy, but if she was really as loud as you're describing, I would either have done the same thing or been really thankful that someone else did.

I have been known to give the "evil glare" to people in my spinning class who are talking, but I've never been brave enough to say something.

  • Loud gym talkers drive me crazy! I wish i had the balls to tell someone to zip it! At my gym, the trainers are pretty good at reminding people of proper etiquette, thank goodness.

She really was.  Not only was she louder than the gym music, I could still hear through my earbuds.  I tried to keep my music as loud as comfortably possible to drown her out and it still didn't work.

On the plus side she apologized.  She also promptly left.  Her leaving immediately made me feel bad for embarassing her but she was crazy loud and old enough to know better (40-50).

  • Unless you unleashed a barrage of foul language and insults, I don't think you should feel bad at all. The fact that you could hear her over your headphones is absurd and now she knows that she needs to keep it down. Frankly you provided a public service.

FWIW, the loudest, most obnoxious person at my gym is a middle-aged woman. She seems incapable of exercising unless she is having a very loud conversation with someone in person or on the phone. I do my best not to choose a machine in her vicinity.  Age doesn't necessarily = knowing better.

  • I wouldn't have had the balls to do it, but I think you had every right to tell her to hush up if she was being that distracting.
  • I probably wouldn't have personally told her to keep it down but I would have applauded you when you did.

This. The only thing I've ever done is mutter things under my breath like, "The signs around the gym say no cell-phone use in the workout areas." or something along those lines.
