Hotel & Restaurant recommendations for Berlin, Pargue, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Paris

My husband and I are heading to Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Paris in May. Any hotel and restaurant recommendations would be appreciated!  Thanks.

Re: Hotel & Restaurant recommendations for Berlin, Pargue, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Paris

  • While in Prague, I stayed at Arcadia Old Town in Konza thirteen apartment #2. The location of this apartment was amazing, just directly off of Old Town Square.

In Paris, my favorite hotel is Hotel Muguet located in the Rue Cler neighborhood.

  • What is your budget for your hotels, per night?  I've been to all of the towns but Berlin, but I'm not sure what your budget is.  If they fit within your budget, I'd recommend:

Prague - we stayed at the Hotel Maximilian and loved it, but we stayed in 2007 so I would check recent ratings on TripAdvisor to make sure it's still good.  Great location, very easy walking distance to Old Town, the bridge, and the castle, but still quiet location.

Paris - we stayed this past June at Hotel Ares Eiffel and also loved it - very close to a Metro stop, quiet side street, only a 5-10 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars.  Accessible to everywhere else thanks to the Metro with lots of good, non-touristy restaurants nearby.  Very decent sized rooms and HUGE bathrooms, which are hard to come by in Paris.

Vienna - we stayed in a Small Luxury Hotel there - the Das Tyrol.  It's part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World chain.  Overall, the hotel and room were very nice and the buffet breakfast was my favorite breakfast I've ever had in any hotel (again, this was in 2007 so check TripAdvisor to see if people still say good things about it).  Great location, walking distance to many sights and close to the public transit there.  I did have one (relatively large) problem while there, but it was a unique one that wouldn't generally affect others traveling there (in short, I sent our dry cleaning out before the night we had tickets to the Nutcracker at the Vienna Opera House and I was promised it would be returned by 5 PM; it actually got returned at 6:50 PM, 10 minutes before the show started, and I was freaking out - changed clothes *in the middle of the lobby* and then left my actual clothes in a heap behind the check-in counter.  We got there really late and couldn't be seated until a break in the Nutcracker, and we'd paid a lot for those tickets so I was ticked, but we did eventually get it resolved to my satisfaction and they even air-mailed one of those famous chocolate tortes to my house *in Seattle* to apologize.  Just a note of caution - give yourself more time if you do dry cleaning than I did!).

Salzburg - don't remember where we stayed with that one, but it was the only hotel I had a travel agent book for us and it was super underwhelming.  I'd try to get a hotel in the old town area if possible.

Munich - also don't remember where we stayed, but it didn't do much for me - it was one of your standard Hilton / Starwood style brand hotels (don't remember which one) and it was a concrete building with very little (aka no) personality or charm.  One thing worth noting in Munich - I didn't find there was a whole lot to do in the city (definitely do a day trip to Schloss Neuschwanstein if you like castles and whatnot, and even though it sounds so depressing do a day trip to Dachau, the concentration camp outside of Munich - it was really emotional but fascinating/educational/maddening all at the same time).  Also, Munich totally closes up on Sundays so if you're going to be there over a Sunday, plan one of your day trips on that day as we didn't realize it shut down on Sundays and we were really bored.

    HTH.  Have fun!

  • We picked up the Prague Time Out Guide which was really helpful for dining. I can't remember the name of the brewery we loved (it had great food as well) but it was right across from our hotel (Dahlia Inn, which was great and only about $70 a night). It was something like Pivovarsky Dum maybe....they had excellent goulash.

In Berlin, I loved Kater Holzig, a a restaurant in an old abandoned factory. The walls are covered with grafitti and there are no windows, and it's all lit by candles, but the food was fantastic and it's a very cool (and very trendy) place. For a cheap, quick meal, try some doner kebap in the Turkish hood - Kreuzberg, or at the W Der Imbiss, which has naan pizzas that are excellent.

I also liked the Clarchens Ballhaus for nightlife. The buildings is 100 a years old, and they have an outdoor beer garden outside and inside they have swing dancing (a mix of hipsters and old folks). In the upstairs ballroom there are still bullet holes in the mirrors.

  • Thanks for all of the recommendations!
