Don't know if I should be happy or disappointed (kind of an AW)

Today, I was supposed to do a 4mile tempo run.  I don't have a Garmin or anything fancy, and was just going to run a one mile loop four times and check my pace each loop.  After a short warm up, I set off on my first loop.  I was pretty out of breath and a little too fast so I tried to slow it down a bit.  After the second loop, I was exhausted and my left shin was killing me, so I headed home.  I totaled 2.96 miles in 28:09, or a 9:33 pace.  My tempos are supposed to be around 9:55 ish a mile.  Not a wonder I was tired, but not sure why I was going so fast!  I haven't run 3miles that fast since cross country in High School.  On one hand, I'm thrilled that I was able to run that fast, on the other hand, I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to slow myself down for some reason, and get in my full 4mile tempo.

On a side note, I think my feet and shins are ready for me to bust out my new shoes!

  • This kind of pacing issue happens to me sometimes. I say you should be happy you were going so fast! Sometimes, for me, that means my "comfort pace" is speeding up by a few seconds. It can tire me out, but it gets me accustomed to my body's rhythms at that speed and then it becomes comfortable. Good luck with the new shoes!
