FTD: Are we in an Age of Ignorance?

I saw an article with this title the other day (and, for the life of me, I cannot remember where I saw it).  It talked about topics such as the Trayvon Martin tragedy and the War on Women, but all of these puritanical pearl-clutching posts on here made me start thinking about it again.  Are we sliding backwards in our way of thinking?  If so, why do you think this is?  If you think things are no different than they've always been, why do you think this is?

ETA:  For clarity, when I refer to purtianical posts, I'm referring to things like the no masturbation is allowed evaarrrrrr post, not the porn thing.

This is my siggy.

  • It seems less as though we as a society are sliding backward, and more that the hick weirdos who have never joined this century are getting more aggressive and powerful.

  • I think the minorities are the most passionate and therefore the most heard.  The media is probably responsible for a large part of that because you're less likely to read something about the millions of people acting normally every day and hear a lot more about the few people freaking out about something.  Unfortunately, the average American probably isn't putting much thought in to social issues until those issues affect them personally.  So all the people who have a very laissez faire attitude towards what other people do aren't going to be as up in arms as the people who think someone else's personal choices are an intentional affront to them.

Also, I think social networking is destroying the world.  Everyone is way too willing to spill all of their personal details, so now we all expect to know absolutely everything about absolutely everyone.  It's not weird for someone to tell the world intimate details anymore.  Therefore, there's a lot more around for people to judge someone else on.  I don't know when the public decided that they're entitled to the personal details of everyone's lives, but they've gotten it now and they're not letting it go.

One more thing, I read somewhere that the recession might have something to do with the conservative backlash because we tend to get more conservative in society when there is a financial upset.  Kind of like, we were ok with the hedonism while we could fund it.  I don't believe that any of these ideas are new though.  I think there have always been pockets of society who felt this way, and now they've discovered that screaming loud enough gets them on "that thar tee vee".

    Yes

I'm looking forward to November 7th. That means as long as there's no controversy, all of this election bullschit will be over and the politicians that are crawling out of the woodwork can go back to their caves and STFU.

Their pretending that the country's problems are all the fault of us "women debils" reeks of... well, another period in time where a specific group was singled out as a scapegoat because no one knew what to do about an economic crisis.

  • Nah, I think people have always been this stupid.

  • I'm with Pedantic.

Also, it would be nice if these political nutbags would all go back to lurking and quit trying to make laws to control the ins and outs of my uterine activity. We've got much bigger shiz to worry about in this country.

  • I'm inclined to agree with Pedantic - people have always been dumb, they're just getting louder, and with social media, everyone has a platform for their ridiculousness.

  • We were never that advanced to begin with.

I think the more likely culprit is that while previously, we tended to stay among people who think like us, are in the same socio-economic level, etc, now we have a bunch of other ways of coming in contact with people who view the world differently.

For instance, without facebook, message boards, twitter, and the 24 hour news network, would we even know people like this exist?

Yes   It's become trendy and acceptable to voice your stupid opinions based on no information rather than embarrassing.  It seriously makes me cringe.

  • I'd like to think that we're not regressing, so I'm gonna agree that it's just the presence of social media that's allowing all the crazies to spout their bs more publicly.  Also the fact that some politicians are publicly saying ridiculous stuff, I think people that share those beliefs are feeling braver about voicing them.
