Convertible carseat on plane?
We are taking my son ton Hawaii next month and purchased him a seat. It's a direct flight from Vegas to Maui and is about 6hours long. We figure he'd sleep better if we took his carseat on and used it in the seat but I'm not so sure it would work. Everything I've read says we are allowed to bring them on as long as they fit in the seat. I'm wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience or has any input regarding whether or not to take the seat on

Re: Convertible carseat on plane?
I have traveled on several long flights with DD (NY-Argentina, NY-Europe, etc.) and I don't use the car seat for these. She has slept through the night on each of these flights (Argentina was 13 hours).
The one time I tried to take a Britax marathon on a flight to Miami, the idiots at the counter told me it wasn't "regulation size" and made me check it. I later found out they were wrong. Just make sure you know all the regulations and can cite them appropriately if someone tells you your seat is too big.
I too have been told a car seat was too big (also a Britax) and I fought them on it and won, and brought it on. It fit, and as long as it is FAA approved it should be fine to bring on.
Saying that we stopped bringing car seats when our son was around 18/19 months (and we were doing long-haul US-UK overnight flights), because he quickly discovered it was at just the right angle to kick the seat in front of him. He sleeps just fine now in the CARES, or even without it.
This is why we don't fly with the carseat in the cabin (we check it). DS is a seat kicker and the carseat just puts him too close to the passenger in front.
I personally don't like lugging a carseat through the airport either. With all the other stuff we have it's one more thing to bother with. We use the CARES harness and it works fine.
We just flew to Aruba from DC (4 1/2+) flight and had DD in her Britax Roundabout seat. My husband installed it front facing (the seat arm gets pushed up). DD is medium hight so at 2 she could barely reach the seat in front of her with her feet, so she couldn't really kick. We've always flown with her convertible or infant seat and she's done great this way, sleeps well.
Since we gate check the stroller, we put the car seat on the stroller (CityMini) to wheel it around and then I carry her thru from checkin to security etc.
What kind of car seat is it? You can check the manufacturers website.
Absolutely bring the seat. We bought a cheapo Cosco Scenera at Target for $50 that is our "travel car seat" because it's very thin and light, perfect for planes and rental cars.
Enjoy Hawaii, super jealous!
the person in front of you won't be able to recline if it is rear facing. can't you just let him sit with the seatbelt and let him lay with his head on your lap? that may work.
