If you donated blood

how long .did it take you to feel normal on your runs?

I donated on Thursday and I have been feeling pretty good (not too tired) but when I exert myself (running up the stairs or running in general) I am really out of breathe and feel like I am out of shape.

My long run (10.5 miles) this weekend was tough as I had to stop a bunch of times. I really hope this passes soon!

Re: If you donated blood

  • 100% normal?  Roughly a week, and that was with drinking a TON of water.  Props to you for doing your long run on Saturday...the last time I did a long run 48 hours after giving blood I was a hotassmess.  Hang in there!
  • My shorter runs feel ok after several days or a week, but I can tell a difference on my longer (an hour or more) runs for 2-3 weeks.

ETA: Hydration is only half the battle. The reason you tire more easily after donating is that you have fewer red blood cells transporting oxygen around your body. It takes time to build those cells back up. (That's why you can only donate once every 57 days or whatever.)

  • I donated a few Sundays ago.  I ran on Monday and felt fine...it was actually as the week went on that things started to go downhill.  I did five miles each on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and Thursday was the worst by far.

It took over a week til I was back to approximately where I was.  Though I have more "blah" runs now than I was having beforehand...I think that'll even out soon.

  • Thanks! Ok..now I have a valid reason for my crap run. My only thought was that I had to get those miles in but it was so exhausting.
  • I've started donating platelets instead of whole blood. Depending on your area, the need is greater for platelet donation, anyway. It takes more time, and it's kind of uncomfortable, but it has pretty much no effect on my performance.

I always wanted to switch to platelets, taking up running kind of pushed me forward. I always struggled with giving whole blood because I go back and forth with low iron issues, anyway.
