F/U to my Pink Slime post

So I decided yesterday to start buying local meats, where I knew how they were raised and how the meat was prepared, the whole deal. I told DH if that meant for affordability that we had to eat less of it, then that's what we'd do. This isn't the first time I've been grossed out or saddened by stories about how our meat is handled or the animals treated. ANYWAYS, it literally took me all day yesterday and most of this morning to find one. We have plenty of small farm stands, but they're all closed until summer! Not helpful. I finally found one that's about a half hour away, and they're open so we're going tonight. I'm slightly excited about this, lol.

Re: F/U to my Pink Slime post

  • What is it that's half hour away?  The butcher or the farm?

Our farmer emails me pictures of the dairy cows and beefers every week. Embarrassed  The farm is actually two and a half hours away, so I haven't made it down there yet, unfortunately.  We buy in bulk (we bought a whole cow for the dogs) and the people who bring our vegetables from down there down mind bringing us our meat and dairy, so we get really lucky.

Sustainably raised chicken isn't affordable here, but I do like knowing we can at least get our beef, eggs, dairy, and veggies from farmers who use organic methods.

Both the Farm and the Store. They butcher and sell their own cattle. They have chickens too, it's all organic and grass fed. I don't know the prices yet, but I'll find out soon enough.

  • Nice!

There can be a significant price difference between a farm that uses organic methods and a farm that's actually certified organic, so don't give up if the prices you see tonight are out of your price range!
