Okay you guys...

How'd I do? (and forgive the terrible photos...I'm terrible at taking photos like this)

I had to go with a gray suite because there's apparently a boycott of my size in all department stores. Most looked like MC Hammer pants and these were at least flattering and fit at the top. Even still, the pants are a bit too long, so I'm going to need to come up with some makeshift adjustment for now until I can bring it in to a seamstress. I was trying to find a top with color but every blouse I tried on I was literally swimming in or was NMS (read: blue leopard print or anything pink) but I really liked this type of neck swooping down thing (kind of frilly, like you guys suggested!). I'm going to try and find a necklace with some color to give me that splash.

Re: Okay you guys...

  • It is cute!  You need a necklace and some fun accessories.  If your ears are pierced I'd go for larger CZ studs and a 16-18" chain with a pretty pendant.

    Also- what shoes?

  • You did a really good job! I like that. And I don't think that a gray suit with a black top is a bad choice at all. TBH, I think if you got a nice silver necklace that would look really good. I have this from Lia Sophia, but something similar?

As far as a quick fix, you can get stuff at like AC moore (or maybe even target) that you can make a temporary hem with. Its kind of like double sided tape.

  • I'd also tell you to go with a shoe with a high heel to help out with the length, but I'm not sure what youre heel experience is and you dont need to be falling on your way into an interview :)

The shoes are some black suede heel...not a terribly tall one, maybe 2-3inch? I have no idea...there was a taller one but omg that would have been disastrous for someone used to sneakers.

What are CZ studs? I have 5 piercings, two on each lobe, and one up at the top on my left ear. I assume that one I should leave empty?

Just wear 1 pair in your bottom holes- CZ are cubic zirconia- fake diamonds.  You want to look put together but not like you're trying too hard, about 3/4-1ct per earlobe- something that covers most of the lobe but doesn't overwhelm.

Agreed with Stees on the hem tape.  You can buy it at Walmart/ Michaels/ any fabric shop- one brand is called "Steam a Seam" but you can buy whatever is cheapest, they all work the same way.

Oo! I will definitely look for that!  I'm going out again today or tomorrow to find some sort of necklace. I like the simplicity of the one in your pic, and I like the silver, I just feel like I look boring with black and gray. I was trying to find something lavender because I know that looks good with my skin tone and eyes, but I don't want to go crazy with the color.

Lavender would look nice.  I am of the opinion that going with neutral or subdued colors is better for interviews, just because going in there with a bunch of chunky flashy jewelry seems distracting and like you're trying too hard.  At least thats how I feel.  I think simple jewelry like what Mary said and a silver or a silver and lavender would look good.

  • I think you did great! I love the suit and I think the black top with the gray suit looks nice.

I agree with the other girls about jewelry - a long silver necklace and simple earrings. I think your shoes sound good and I would get the hem tape and just "hem" the pants to the correct length for those shoes.

Also, do you have a watch? I think adding a watch would add to the professionalism of the whole look.

  • Ooh, and what bag?

Do you have something to take resumes in with you and something to write with and on?  I love padfolios for interviewing- just a solid color and leather, something that ideally has 2 pockets (one for cover letters and one for resumes) and a full sized legal pad on the other side.  It would be a good investment.

  • You did great!  I like that suit!  I also agree with Mary, Stees and Ames that some classic jewelry will complete the look.

Actually, I just found my old watch. Its a Fossil, silver, but the face is rainbow and the battery is dead.

Crap, I do not have any sort of bag. My purse is a leather hobo style, so probably won't really go with this professional look. I like the idea of a padfolio though! One of the places I'm going to I know has that kind of thing, so I'll definitely pick something like that up.

I was about to say this same thing.  Also, a fun necklace would go nice.
