Can we talk about toxins and detoxes?
When people talk about "detox diets" and other "detox" measures that rid your body of "toxins", what specifically are they talking about? What are these substances they call toxins?
Re: Can we talk about toxins and detoxes?
"You don't get to be all puke-face about your kid shooting your undead baby daddy when all you had to do was KEEP HIM IN THE FLUCKING HOUSE, LORI!" - doctorwho
These folks have bought into the snake oil salesman's pitch. "Toxins" is a scary word; who wants toxins in their bodies? Nobody who's into this can name an actual toxin, has had a test to see if they really are harboring any toxins, or has had a follow up test to see if anything has changed.
And the crap that supposedly clears the toxins? No way would it work. If that "deotx" stuff were true, we wouldn't need chelation therapy to treat lead ingestion. Vinegar and lemon juice won't do any thing to clear lead (or anything else) from your system.
I have pretty limited experiences with detox.
1) I was once recommended a certain tea to get a medication out of my system after I found I was allergic to it. It was taking my rash a really long time to clear, so this tea was supposed to speed up my metabolism a little, make me pee more, and thereby get my system moving faster and get rid of whatever of the medication was left in my body. I didn't actually try it because the store was out of it and like hell I was going to gather herbs or WTFever, so I can't say if it works.
2) The other experience was with a BSC friend of my aunt's who partied hard 3 weeks of the month and went on a liquid-only detox diet the other week, to make up for it. It was something like water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper combined with a laxative. Hey, here's an idea. Maybe if you didn't live on Pizza Hut and tequila, you wouldn't feel like your body is run down and needs a "correction."
I don't judge anybody for trying to get rid of something that is making them sick. I do think that the trendy Hollywood coffee enema BS is straight up dumb.
