Anyone done Boston?

I'm asking for my mom who's running this year...

Was the official pre-race pasta dinner worth going to? The food looks good so we might just do that for our dinner the night before if it's good.

Would you put your cell phone in your race bag? She's worried about finding the rest of us afterwards and I'm sure the finish line will be crazy.

TIA!

Re: Anyone done Boston?

  • It's just your typical pasta buffet like you'd see at a fundraiser or church even (IMO), not terrible, nothing special. We went both years I ran just to be part of the race atmosphere, and it was fun to meet other runners.

I don't think I'd put a cell phone in a checked bag at any race. It's probably better to to scope out a meeting spot ahead of time just off Boylston, if you're planning to wait near the finish line.

Best of luck to your mom!

  • Good luck to your mom!!  I was supposed to run this year but got pregnant and had to pull out.  My dad is running it and it's his first Boston too.

  • In regards to the cell phone, is she using a hydration belt?  Mine has a pouch that my phone fits into.  That way, I have it on me and don't have to worry about getting to the bag check before I find my friends/family.   (it also helps if you need to reach someone during the race...like when I started feeling dizzy in the middle of a half and had to warn H that I was going to finish later than I expected)

  • I didn't have my phone. It was really easy to find my family at the finish/family meeting area. They have it organized by letter. Dh tracked me so he knew when to look for me.

If you want other options, the North End is where all the Italian restaurants in Boston are. I'm sure it will be mobbed with marathoners looking for pasta, but it is hard to go wrong in the North End.

I would never put my cell phone in my race bag at any race either. I either carry it with me (wrapped in a plastic baggie in my Fuelbelt pocket or Spibelt) or leave it home. I was very glad I had my phone with me after the Chicago Marathon. It was a nightmare trying to find DH. He had to stand next to someone with a helium balloon. Even then AND being on the phone with him, it was hard to find him. Our conversation went like this: DH: I am next to a smiley face balloon. Me: I see 3. Hat or no hat? DH: Hat. Me: OK, I see 2. Left or right?

  • Thanks for the advise. I think we'll end up just picking a spot to meet if she doesn't want to carry her phone.

I'm guessing we'll end up going to the pasta feed too. I know we're meeting some friends-of-a-friend for dinner on Saturday night on the north side for Italian. We'll be sure to make a reservation.

Another question... How many times did it take you guys to qualify? Planning this trip has got me really wanting to run it. I'm running marathon #2 so I'm hoping to shoot for it anyways.

  • I qualified sort of by accident at my seocnd marathon (was just hoping to break 4 hours at that one), and then again at my 5th marathon. I've run 6 total.

That was under the old standards though. Making it to Boston under the new standards? Challenge accepted! :)

After running my first marathon and only missing a BQ time by 6 minutes (Detroit 2009), I was set on qualifying.  I ran my 2nd marathon and missed it by 4 minutes (Chicago 2010) then finally BQ-ing at my 3rd by beating my qualifying time by 12 minutes (Traverse City 2011).  Unfortunately, I won't be able to run it this year due to being 33+ weeks pregnant on April 16th.  I fully intend on using my 3:28 time to run Gansett in April 2013.  I already checked w/ the Gansett race director and this time will be accepted for 2013.  they go back 2 years and even if they drop the time by 5 minutes, I still have a fast enough time to register.

My goal is to BQ again in the very near future.  Ideally, early on in 2013 so I can run in 2014.  I am running a marathon this fall but highly doubt I will BQ.

Good Luck! I'm sure you will. I'm heard so many stories about women getting after after kids. We had a family friend who ran around a 3:10 at Boston after her pre-kid PR was around 3:30.

  • I qualified at my tenth last December...although most of those were run more casually. I've increased my mileage quite a bit over the last couple of years and last fall was the first time that I ever did "proper" training mileage for a marathon (60+ MPW). I also got pretty lucky, with perfect weather and a very forgiving course. Boston 2013 for me!

  • I qualified in my 4th marathon and 2nd real attempt. I knew not to try in my first marathon. There's an epic disaster attempt where I was undertrained and coming back from an injury that I don't count.
