I am not new to the nest, but I haven't posted much on H&F. I used to post on other boards but stopped when I started to really get into working out (I went over to MFP).
Now I'm almost at goal weight and have started running and I absolutely love it. Part of the reason I even started was coming on this board was from reading about all your experiences/how much you enjoy it.
Anyway, I am training for a 10k which is in 2.5 weeks. I feel like now is the time to intro myself since I know I will have lots of questions- I have never done a race before. After this race I am starting a half marathon training program (scary!).
So, I have a couple of questions to start me off.
1. My town isn't that big so I doubt races are even big events. How do I know my time/place, etc. after the race? Do I wait around at the finish line?
2. Do all races give out shirts?
3. I have done lots of 10K runs as of right now, and I don't bring water. Should I be brining water or anything with me on the run?
4. The race also has a half marathon option- will it be VERY clear which way to go? (It's a road race).
Thanks so much- I am sure I'll have more questions as the race comes along.
Re: Hello and upcoming race
CONGRATS on the 10K. I am thinking about a 10k on my road to a half marathon so you are truly an inspiration to keep trekking! I just ran an 8k which I will call my "springtime" race as I ran it last year and I have run one other 5k.
1. My town isn't that big so I doubt races are even big events. How do I know my time/place, etc. after the race? Do I wait around at the finish line? Most races post the official time on their website or you can find out if you have been tracking from the beginning of the race until the end. I could not wait three days to find out so I set up my run tracker app as I ran. Either the bib they give you or a tag they place on you tracks your time as you run out the sensors at the start line and when you get to the finish line.
2. Do all races give out shirts? Sometimes, depending on the time of year you may get more than a shirt. I am hoping to sign up for the Hot Chocolate run which they give out either windbreakers or sweatshirts. It depends.
3. I have done lots of 10K runs as of right now, and I don't bring water. Should I be brining water or anything with me on the run? If you feel like you need the hydration I say go for it! Most races have hydration stations.
4. The race also has a half marathon option- will it be VERY clear which way to go? (It's a road race). I did a 5k run/ walk where I walked and there was a 15k at the same time. There were clearly separate and at no time "blended" together. It will be clearly marked for you to go the right path. Good luck!
1. My town isn't that big so I doubt races are even big events. How do I know my time/place, etc. after the race? Do I wait around at the finish line? I stick around to see my posted time and because I'm getting closer to being a finisher in my age bracket at smaller races. They usually have a spot near the finish line where they print out results every so often. Otherwise, every race I've ever been in has posted the results on their website within a few days.
2. Do all races give out shirts? No but I think most probably do. All but a few of my races have given shirts - I've done 1 race where we got nothing and I've seen people share that they got something other than a shirt (jacket, sweatshirt, running socks)
3. I have done lots of 10K runs as of right now, and I don't bring water. Should I be brining water or anything with me on the run? I don't do anything different from regular runs. I don't carry water on a 6 miler so I don't bring water on race day. Do whatever you are comfortable with. I'm running a 10k this weekend and there will be 3 water stations. Even if I feel like I need water along the way, 3 stops makes me feel comfortable enough to not bother carrying water.
4. The race also has a half marathon option- will it be VERY clear which way to go? (It's a road race). Yes, it should be quite clear. This fall I ran a race like this and the signs were extremely clear.
