We've never rented a car outside of the US. Is there anything special we need to know about renting a car in Mexico (picking up in Cancun and driving to Tulum)?

Re: international car rental
I rented a car in Cancun several years ago and drove it down to Tulum and all around the Riviera Maya. I was originally quite nervous to do this but in the end in was a wise decision as it enabled me to be able to visit so many places and not have to pay for pick-ups or transfers. This area of Mexico is very easy to drive in. I would recommend purchasing extra insurance in case of an accident, try to avoid driving at night (due to lack of visibility), and bring your expired DL with you as well as your current one. While planning that trip I had read that if you are ever pulled over it's good to hand the police officer an expired license because occasionally they will keep it and you'll still have the original hidden somewhere else in your wallet.
Additionally, when gas station attendants fill up your tank, monitor the pump from beginning to end as they sometimes inflate the cost; I caught someone doing this to me and as soon as I pointed it out they charged me the correct amount.
if you're pickng it up at cancun airport and driving it to tulum it's jsut one road-307 (or 317 Ican't ever remember which). it's a 2 or 3 lane highway each way-some parts have traffic lights, some dont. there's construction going on near playa del carmen (or there was when i was there in december) that makes an overpass for through traffic, and the service roads for local access. it's a mess.
it's not difficult to drive it-it's maybe jsut a bit over an hour.
