Torn Medial Meniscus

Has anyone had one?  I just had surgery on mine today.  They had to take out the tear, to much damage to repair.  I guess the doctor told my husband I shouldn't run anymore (even when recovered).  Has anyone run after having this? Please tell me my doctor is just really old school and that I can run again.  I will ask at my follow up appointment for clarity, but I was just wondering if anyone has experience with this.

Re: Torn Medial Meniscus

  • I work for an ortho.  Most physicians will flat-out say no more running after total meniscectomy.  The reason is a significantly increased risk for developing early-onset osteoarthritis.  If you're the scholarly type, this paper sort of explains it better than I can:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2603439/

The conclusion is essentially that the physician/therapist would need to consider a variety of risk factors prior to approving an attempt to return to running.

  • Thanks, that is basically what my doctor told my husband. Sigh I guess it is a good thing i like other sports too like biking.
  • I probably should have been a little more obvious in stating it, but there is a (admittedly small) possibility that you could return to running after your recovery is complete.

I'd definitely ask your ortho for a more in-depth consideration when you go in for follow-up.  It never hurts to ask.

I read that.  I will definitly bring it up with my ortho I just wanted other's takes on it as it will be almost two weeks before I see him again for post-op.

  • I had most of my medial meniscus removed when I was 15 after a skiing accident.  At the time (there were other issues as well), my ortho told me I'd probably have a knee replacement by the time I was 30.  It took me a LONG TIME to heal (had surgery again at 19).  I started running after I had DD (at 30) and honestly my knee is the only thing that hasn't bothered me, lol.  Not suggesting that you *should* run again after that, but I have for a few years with no problems (and with my doctor's blessing).  GL and hope you have a speedy recovery!

This is what I wanted to hear lol.  I know I might not run and am beginning to be ok with that because i do other things too.  But my running time is my me time.  It is my biggest stress relief go to.

I had most of my MM removed at 19, and started running last year, at 33.  My doc couldn't be more pleased.  He feels like the other health benefits outweigh the arthritis, and just suggested I take osteo biflex. I'm running s 15k Sunday and couldn't feel better.

  • I had the majority of my medical meniscus removed last November and I was told to avoid running. I have tried since then to run and it is way too painful for me. I have already been diagnosed with osteoarthritis so the risk is already there, unfortunately.

I would do your research and talk to your surgeon/physical therapist some more before attempting to run.

What I'm most looking forward to in 2012:
Vacations with DH, baby G 1.0, and Riley's first birthday!

  • I haven't torn my medial meniscus, but I tore my lateral meniscus last Spring while training for my first half. While on surgery, they found I had a discoid meniscus and reshaped that as well. It took me months but I'm running again and just ran my first post op race last weekend. GL to you!
