Can anyone speak to experiences getting around either the Pyrenees or the French Basque Country without a car? DH and I are planning a trip to Pamplona and the Spanish Basque Country, but will be starting on the French side. We're debating flying into Pau (Pyrenees) and touring around there first v. flying into Biarritz and making our way slowly down to Spain from there.
Our main goal is to get to Pamplona and San Sebastian, so anything we see on the French side is just a nice bonus. Ease of traveling is my main priority, but of course we'd like to have a nice time overall. We're two city dwellers who hate driving and we don't like the idea of dealing with any potential issues taking a rental car over the border anyway.
Re: Getting around Southern France w/o a car
We'd definitely be taking buses or trains around. But I'm wondering if one area (Biarritz & surrounding towns) would be easier than the other (Pau & the Pyrenees).
I can't imagine visiting Europe without driving again! We had a Euro Delivery and picked up a car there and drove through 5 countries with no problems whatsoever. It was like driving into another state. Italian driving was a bit insane but we lived lol.
Even if you hate driving, you'll be able to see so much more if you can drive because you make your own time. We saw and got tons of beautiful pictures because we were able to pull over when we wanted to and just take our time. We drove 2400 miles in a week and I felt it was much more relaxing and easy to go about our own schedule then to have to constantly watch the clock and make sure we get to the train station in time.
No real advice here otherwise :P I just highly recommend driving if it's at all possible.
