Southern runners, please tell me about summer runs

When do you go? how bad is it?

I've been running at the gym on the treadmill and I've just figured out that I can't use the childcare once DS gets out of school in early june - he's too old for the daytime hours and we have a family commitment for the evenings, so there's just no time.

I think I'm going to have to run outside. In July. in a place where we regularly see 100+ or 110+.

Yikes! when do you run in the heat? any tips?

Also, we don't have sidewalks here, so daylight hours are better for a whole bunch of reasons..

  • I'm lucky in that I live in a very runner/walker-friendly neighborhood. During the work week, I get out by 6 am; on the weekends, I try to get out no later than 7:30 or 8. And if I have to get out later, I hit up my neighborhood gym's treadmill.

    I'm in Central Florida, so I'm obviously familiar with sweltering temps!

  • You either get up at the butt crack of dawn or go late at night (after 9-10pm, this is what I prefer). LOTS Of water and just be prepared to SWEAT!

  • During the week I usually have to run after work, usually around 6:30. For my weekend long run, we head out at 6:30 or 7 depending on the length of the run. If I can finish within an hour of the sun coming up it's manageable. Summer time is usually just about keeping a base for me, so long runs won't go over 12 miles. Honestly, it sucks, but can be done. I'm in FL, so it's not just hot temps, it's the humidity. I just make sure I have plenty if water stops & I give in to the fact that pace is going to be severely affected. It's not fun, but come fall I'm usually a stronger runner for pushing myself through the summer.

    I run after work - i usually time it so that i'm getting home as the sun is setting. We also don't have sidewalks, and it's not runner friendly so running in the dark is not ideal.

    Long runs are done early Saturday morning - we are on the trail by 645. But IF i decide to do a full this fall, i have a feeling we'll be out a heck of a lot earlier than 645.

  • Well, imagine that you did something horrid--like kicked a basket full of puppies--and god promptly stuck you dead. You then wake up in a gloomy cavern surrounded by a molten river of lava. The air around you is thick and steamy, choking your lungs with the odorous, humid feeling of charred skin and evaporating body fat. As you move through that place, every so often an elephantine mechanical device barrels past you, missing by inches and probably bellowing at you. 

    Repeat this for 5 long months, and you have running in the south.

    So far, not a fan.

    Look who's considering a full!! ;) Seriously....winter marathon. You're going to be kicking yourself if you train for a fall. 4 people in my running group dropped their fall marathons last year because doing 20+ milers in September or October feels like a death sentence. I would hate for you to hate the experience. This past time I started end of October for a Feb marathon & it was awesome! Spring/early summer races work well too if you run them somewhere that has nice weather. Just something to keep in mind. :)

  • I go early early- preferably before the sun is up.  Bring water or go to trails where there are water fountains.
  • Water. Drink lots and lots of water...all throughout the day, not just during workouts. Watch your electrolytes as well. I like Nuun since it's only 5 calories a serving.

    Normally I do most of my running/working out indoors during the summer.  For a half marathon or less, I think you can get by using the treadmill for your training. That's what I've done the past 2 summers.

    You'll still want to go out of your comfort-zone, so to speak, by doing runs outside. Try to run early or late when the sun isn't out. The benefits of working out in the heat, such a extra blood volume, will carry into the fall and make for good races.

    I trained for a fall marathon when I live in Ft. Lauderdale a few years ago, and I don't remember it being too terrible. I'd run before work, or later in the evening around sunset. Normally there'd be an ocean breeze. I'd stash water bottles on my route before I got started if it was especially hot.

    Atlanta is a different story. The air seems a lot more humid and stagnant. Even at 2 am it'll be 85 degrees and 90% humidity.

    Training for my first marathon since moving here is going to be interesting! I plan to do a lot of super early long runs that start at like 4am.

    We (pinkwillow & I) are thinking about doing space coast, which is nov 25th.  That one works best with our schedule. Yeah, i don't doubt training in the summer is going to suck, but right now its either space coast, or none.  We haven't registered yet, so nothing is definite.

  • I run early in the morning or sometimes late at night but that can be tricky if it really isnt cooling down but 15 degrees overnight . I sweat a lot and bring lots of water, sometimes after my run i will have about half a cup to a cup of gatorade  depending on how long I ran and how I am feeling.

  • I don't think I'll ever do another fall marathon...not as long as I'm living in the South!

    I've only been here a couple of years but so far in my experience, you run earlier, slower, and shorter. This summer, I'm planning on using the hottest months as a time to cut down my mileage to a maintenance level and focus on other types of (indoor, air conditioned) workouts.

  • I go after work. it's less humid then.  once you get acclimated it's not so bad. hydrate all the time, not just when your running.

    if it's dangerous hot or if the air quality is shitty I'll take it indoors.

  • Holy hot run!  I ran at 9:30am last week along Ft. Lauderdale beach....only did 3 miles b/c I was soooo hot.   I much prefer my Chicago summer temps :)  (although I ran in over 90* heat many evenings last summer and it was hot as balls at 7pm still).   Summer heat = treadmill :)

  • For cycling, we HTFU and ride usually after work. Summer is a great time to ride a bike! :)
  • It's sometimes good to go full on sun. Not all the time, but it does push your limits. Also during those times less crowded. Early evening is when everyone runs in FL.

     

     

  • Yesterday I was stupid and ran at 5 pm with the stroller. Worst idea ever. It seemed so nice outside until I started running.

    Anyways last summer what I did was ran super late ( 8 pm or later ) or super early. 5 am or earlier. I think I'm going to keep with that. I also drank 100 - 200 ounces of water a day!

    I'm going to just try to keep a base of 8 / 10 miles on weekends and run a couple of 5 mile runs during the week. I will work on swimming and biking in the summer.

  • I run at 4:45 in the morning.  It is still hotter than crap at that time of the morning, but at least the sun isn't up yet.   I am in Houston btw.
  • I'm in Houston, Texas and limited to when I can run so it's usually between 5-6pm.  When it starts getting really hot (100+) I do my best to drink as much water as possible.  I usually bring two full bottles with me and then refill along the way.  Our community sprinklers come on towards the end of my run, so I take advantage when I can.  My mileage and speed suffers through July and August but I push through as much as I can.
