And any other TN Nestie who lurks. I'm taking bets on the Norris/McCormick Municipal School District bill being passed today.
Quick background: The TN General Assembly created a prohibition against the formation of special and municipal school districts in the state for a couple of reasons: 1) to create uniform school districts and 2) because small towns couldn't afford the cost of running school districts. Of course, Shelby County is the impetus for this law as there is considerable debate that the provision in the Norris-Todd 2011 law would be ruled illegal because it is essentially a private act thrown under the guise of state law. The rush is to get the muni bill passed so that it won't rule any Shelby County muni districts as illegal.
What are you guys hearing about it in your neck of the woods? I've always heard that the suburban folks in Chattanooga would love this bill to pass because they hate Hamilton County School District.
House Education takes it up at 3:30pm today. I've been livid and all Fight the Power for weeks, but after recent developments, I'm on the I Don't Give A Flying Fuccks anymore train.

Hamilton County public schools are in bad shape but Im really not sure what the answer is. Some of the private schools in the area cost more than college tuition and there is supposed to be a new magnet school opening this fall.

Are there any rumblings from other suburban cities about how this could pave the way for new districts?
There is some kind of movement in Ooltewah to redistrict Ooltewah and the Hamilton Place area (NE Chatt) but I dont know what thats really about. East Hamilton High and Middle are brand new schools and it could be an effort to keep those schools away from some of the Chatt city kids.
Sibil - Hellz yes!
I'm curious to see if there has been any buzz on this passing out of House Ed Subcommittee today. My contacts don't have any new info it.
Hmm, interesting. I've often wondered why Farragut hasn't pushed to not be covered by Knox County. It seems pretty common IME for the suburban schools to push away from the county if possible.
I haven't heard anything here, but you know, most of our news is UT related, lol. Or at least the lead stories are and then I am bored by the end of that.
I mean, I think the biggest news around here is some "We back Pat" billboard.
I'm going to look at the Knox News-Sentinel, though, and see if there's anything that's not on the front page.
