Anyone do their own Shellac/CND at home?

I love the look of Shellac, but can't spend $35-$40 a pop to get my nails done twice a month, and would love to be able to do this when I have time, not trying to fit in a nail appointment twice a month. I've thought about buying the lights and polish and doing them myself, which over time would be more cost-effective, but not sure how it would turn out with me doing them myself.

If you do them at home, please recommend your lights, polish brand, tips, etc.  Thanks!

I did, back in the 80s when UV gels first came out.

If you can paint your nails well, then you can do your own gels.

  • i have the red carpet manicure set from ulta. i really like it (and use it often), though i do not think that my own DIY manicure is 100% on par in terms of quality (though it is close) with what i get from a professional. that said, i will be continuing to do my own nails.

  • I need to check into this.  I've never researched it but read about it on here and a couple of girls at work have had their nails done professionally.

Is it essentially a polish technique that makes your polish last longer?  I was in high school in the 80's and don't remember this technique and I was into polishing my nails back then. I don't know how I missed it!

  • I use Gelac, which I find to be practically mistake proof. They last me about a week, but only because I choose to not use the primer that keeps it lasting even longer. I get bored easy :). My starter set cost about $65, and included 6 colors, the primer, top coat, and cleanser. My UV light was about $30. I've had it for a little over a year now and have had tons of use out of it.

it's basically a gel/polish hybrid. you paint on a primer, cure with a UV light. then color, cure. then top coat, cure. the manicure is supposed to last for 7-14 days (I personally never got it past day 9).

  • I do my own.  I  UV lamp from ebay for about 30 bucks, and ordered OPI gel polish from justpolish.com

The bottles are about 18 bucks a piece but If I do them myself 3-4 times then I've made my money back.....I also use the gel base, then regular nail polish and then the top coat over it.  Seems to work ok

The biggest thing is to make sure you don't get any of the gel on your cuticles or skin.  That will cause it to peel.

(I used to be a liscensed nail tech, I let my liscense lapse ....bad me)

  • I just bought the Gelcolor starter kit from OPI along with an LED light- will let you know how it goes!
