Getting pregnant on your placebo week?
Can you get pregnant if you have sex during your week of placebo pills?
I've been taking birth control pills for 6 months...but I always want to have sex the week i'm off the pill, but refrain because I don't want to get pregnant just yet.
Thank you!
Re: Getting pregnant on your placebo week?
No. If you are taking the pills correctly you'll be fine.
You should make sure you read the information package that is inside the pill box as well so that you better understand how your pill works.
No...because the placebo week is the week of your period.
From the Planned Parenthood website:
Some birth control pills contain two hormones ? estrogen andprogestin. These are called combination pills. Some are progestin-only pills. Most women on the pill take combination pills. The hormones in the pill work by keeping a woman?s ovaries from releasing eggs ? ovulation. Pregnancy cannot happen if there is no egg to join with sperm. The hormones in the pill also prevent pregnancy by thickening a woman?s cervical mucus. The mucus blocks sperm and keeps it from joining with an egg. The hormones also thin the lining of the uterus.
So the placebo week just allows your body to flush out the minimal lining that has been built up over the month. Since no egg has been prepared for ovulation, there is no egg to be fertilized by sex during your placebo week.
If you are so freaked out about it, go on Seasonique - a set of pills that gives you no placebo week for 3 months.
Ditto.
But this isn't the reason you don't get pregnant. You CAN get pregnant during your period.
You're mom is the one in a million case then.
I agree!!! I've never had to worry about getting pregnant on the pill and I've been on the same one for 10 years
You CAN get pregnant if you have sex. PERIOD. No birth control is perfect and, yes, people have been known to get pregnant on the pill.
However, your chances of getting pregnant do not get any higher when on placebo weeks than they are when on the active weeks. There are things that lower the ability of your pills (like antibiotics), but that ain't one of them.

Thanks! So do you recommend Seasonique? My doc prescribed Microgestin to me. Since it has the lowest amount of estrogen, i think.
I try to read the instructions but of course all birth control pills have disclaimers that pregnancy can still happen. Just want to understand what's the norm.
Really appreciate everyone's insight.
