Several days ago, in the middle of the night, one of our smoke alarms went off. It beeped maybe three or four times and then stopped. No fire. A nearby window was open, so I thought maybe it "caught a whiff" of something outside that caused it to beep and closed the window. A few hours later, it beeped again, maybe 2-3 times. A few hours later, it beeped again. I replaced the batteries, but that didn't change the situation. It wasn't the intermittent but regular beep that usually happens when the battery needs changing anyway, but I thought I'd try it.
So, I figured it probably needed to be replaced. It's been there since we bought the house 6 years ago, and who knows how long before that. I got a new smoke alarm. Everything was fine for a few days, but at 4:00 this morning: beep beep beep. Then at 6:00 this morning: BEEP.
WTF?
Anyone have any insight?
Re: This has me stumped
I'm down with this idea, but I love an excuse to conversate and/or look at a fireman.
I have no idea why a total replacement wouldn't have stopped it, that is really strange. I'd say it's a ghost sending up invisible smoke signals, but I know you don't believe in that.
This sounds like a job for...

How many alarms do you have? Are they hard wired into each other (usually they are if they were installed post-1998)? You may have a problem with either one of the other units, or the wiring between them. I would say call the non-emergency fire department in your area.
