Re: Seche Vite for top coat, but what's the best base coat?

  • my nails are very thin and break easily too. I haven't found my holy grail base coat yet.

what are you looking for in a base coat? treatment, or holding your nail polish to your nails? for treatment, I've loved Sally Hansen Triple Strong--I wear this as a base coat but prefer not to since it doesn't help nail polish stick (chips within a day). I usually wear this when I'm forgoing color. for helping your nail polish stick, there are several that I've tried--Orly Bonder (very good), China Glaze Strong Adhesion (very good, what I currently use), CND Stickey (awesome, except for the blue tint that alters whatever color you put on top, this needs to be remedied), Zoya Anchor (okay, works best with Zoya colors). I've not been a fan of OPI or Essie base coats or treatments.

  • CND Stickey worked awesome for me....but then it got thick and gooey too quickly and I haven't bought any more.
  • Thanks -- this is a good list.  I guess I should start with treatment and then try the other ones .  :)

  • I'm using Orly Bonder and it's pretty good.  For my next purchase, I'm going to buy butter london base coat.  I had a manicure done with it and I loved how it had color to it like face foundation so when you put the nail color on, you got the true color of the polish.
  • I've been using orly bonder but after reading this I might try the butter london.

  • I've found Perfect Formula nail gel coat to be a great base, and it really helps strengthen your nails in the process.

I just tried Zoya Anchor for the first time last night with a Zoya polish, so I can't speak to that yet.

  • I use a layer of Orly Nail Defense.  I let that dry.  Once dry it soaks into the nail when dry making the coat extremely thin.  Usually the first nail is dry by the time I finish the last.   Then I use a layer of Orly Bonder.  The Nail Defense under the Bonder usually helps my manicure last since it keeps my nails from splitting/chipping and that is what was causing my polish to chip.  The Bonder is pretty sticky and also helps keep the polish on.

I had short, splitting nails until I started using strengthener under the base coat.  Now they barely chip or break unless I leave the manicure on too long.  I can usually get away with close to a week using this combo.  I figure that since they do two totally different things using them together will help.  Also, the layers are so thin that they don't make the extra layers that thick.

  • I've been using Gripper by Nail Life and I really like it. I purchased at Sally's. I have noticed a difference between using this one and others that I've tried such as OPI Natural Nail base coat.
