Is this normal?

I'm. So. Tired.

I know it's probably a combination of the end of the year with coming off a bunch of travel and increasing my mileage, but I'm exhausted.  Even on my 5 mile run today, I just wanted to be done. I'm already sort of dreading tomorrow's run and can't even start thinking about the 19 on Saturday.  I still am completely committed to the marathon and still excited to run it, I'm just... tired.

Is this a typical lull, do you think?  I'm afraid to take any time off right now, but am sort of frustrated with myself.  Thoughts?

Re: Is this normal?

  • Take a rest day or two. You won't lose any of the work you have put in so far. In fact taking some rest days may even let you perform better! Oh and drink some water on that 19 miler this weekend! ;)
  • Yes normal, and it's ok to take a day off. If you're already dreading tomorrow's run, swap it for a rest day.
  • I agree with the previous posters. Especially given all your traveling, I'd take a rest day or two.

  • Me too!!! We're kind of on the same schedule (my marathon is 5/6) and I just am totally losing my running mojo because of the exhaustion.  I'm thinking about taking some time off next week just to let my body rejuvenate....I hate to do it but I think my mind and body need it.
  • Normal! Especially the first time you train for a marathon. Get some extra sleep and drink plenty of water. Ease up on your running pace if you have to. If you get bitten by the marathon bug, you'll be less tired in future training cycles.

  • Dr. H&F says to take a few days off, practice your couch surfing, beer/wine drinking, and chocolate eating!
  • Thanks, you guys.  Sometimes I just need the obvious pointed out to me.  Day off it is - and I'm already looking forward to going home and doing nothing. Smile  I'll pick up a few miles tomorrow and then the long run on Saturday.
