Driving Overseas + GPS?

I'll be renting a car in Turkey.  I don't want to pay $$$ to rent a GPS unit from the rental company.  Is there an iPhone app for international roads?  Sorry if I sound like a blockhead Embarrassed

Re: Driving Overseas + GPS?

  • when dh and i drove in sicily we just went to the garmin site and downloaded the map and used it there.

  • I am unsure if there is an iPhone app for driving. However, even if there is, you would have to pay for service in Turkey which I imagine would be quite expensive (unless you purchase a sim card). I suggest that you purchase a GPS unit prior to leaving for your trip. I have one that works in the US, Canada, and all over Europe. I bought it several years ago at Costco for around $100.
  • sorry-we used our own garmin. not sure if you have one or not

but yes there are many apps for that. search in app store. igo primo turkey nav is only $35.

  • You can just use the built-in Maps app.

While you have a WiFi connection, if you view the area in Maps, it will cache them. You can use the iPhone's location service with Cellular Data turned off, so as long as you still have enough cell coverage to triangulate the position, your position will be noted on the map. If you zoom into a level that you don't have cached, it will show all gray, because it won't download new maps while Cellular Data is turned off.

We've done this a lot when we travel, including driving around Scotland. The only problem is that if there isn't good enough cell coverage, you won't get a location on your iPhone at all (even if you had a dedicated route app). But you can still use the cached maps.

  • I would ask the company from which you are renting the car how much it would be to rent a GPS.  We rented one for two weeks in New Zealand, and it was pretty cheap.  That may be more cost-effective than getting international charges on your phone (unless you already have an international plan), and it will certainly be cheaper than buying a GPS...

Wow, that's ridiculous.  I just looked at our rental voucher from NZ and it was only $5/day extra for GPS.
