Dating profile question - weigh in

Does talking about places around the world that you've traveled to make you sound wordly and interesting, giving people something to talk to you about... or braggy?

Re: Dating profile question - weigh in

  • It depends...

I know a guy who often talks and also mentioned on his resume that he traveled to like 11 different countries.  At first, I thought that was bragging, especially for the resume part.

However, after learning more about him, he does mission works in those 11 countries and is a huge part of the community.  It shows that he is able to pick up language skills and people skills.  I find it very impressive and actually think highly of him.

  • To me, it sounds a little braggy.  If you like to travel, just say you like to travel and have been to many places.  If someone has that in common with you, that alone will be enough to spark a conversation.  Right?

I like to travel, but I have no idea how many places I've been to.  I don't keep a running tally.

  • I think it depends on how you phrase it and how much you focus on it. If you talk excessively about it, then yes, it sounds braggy. If you say something like "I love to travel and some of the my favorite places are x, y and z" then it just sounds like you like to travel.

  • I agree with PPs.  As long as the tone isn't self-important, I think it's fine!

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

  • I think it's ok.  I side eye guys who say their favorite place is Aruba and ask me if I've ever been.  It's like they're inviting me there to kill me.  haha

OMG I totally side eye people that say Aruba is their fav place... it's a freaking desert and it is so windy!  There are so many more beautiful amazing islands, I don't get the appeal of Aruba at all.

Sandy deserts are easy to hide bodies in and Dutch bureaucracy makes it easy to get away with murder?? I don't get it either.

  • Haha I agree with Aruba on both counts. It's so commercialized that I don't get the huge appeal, never mind that a guy could do away with me so easily there! No thanks!

Oh and in regards to the bragging in dating profiles, when I was on Match I started to feel like the only person who hadn't gone rapelling into a volcano or riden a dolphin through the Great Barrier Reef, and I get around quite a bit!

  • If you are into that I think it sounds interesting.  I am so not into world travel so if I saw that on someone's profile, that wouldn't be a selling point.

On the other hand if someone has traveled a lot and has interesting stories, etc that would be cool- as long as it's not something they want me to do with them or do often.
