What to do in Hawaii (Oahu)?

Hey nesties.

Dh and I are going to Hawaii for 5 days at the end of April. Anyone ever been?

We want to do the usual beachy type things, but were just wondering if anyone has any MUST-See (do) things? We'll just be on the island of Oahu.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Re: What to do in Hawaii (Oahu)?

  • I used to live on Oahu, and we got pretty good at giving our visitors the basic Oahu tour:

    • Pearl Harbor
    • Roy's in Hawaii Kai for an upscale meal (there's one in Waikiki, too)
    • A beach on the Windward side (Kailua or Lanikai usually)
    • A hike (varied depending on their ability, Manoa Falls is neat, Kaena Point is beautiful, Diamond Head is close to Waikiki but crowded and I don't like that there's nothing to see until you get to the top, the Kuliou'ou Ridge Trail is tougher but fun)
    • A hole in the wall meal, usually a plate lunch (Diamond Head Market & Grill is awesome)
    • A mai tai at House Without a Key at the Halekulani
    • A North Shore beach (usually Sunset or Waimea Bay)
    • A sunset sail on one of the catamarans that leaves from Waikiki

  • There are so many things to do. It really depends on what you're interested in. These have been some of our favorites:

    - Grand Island Tour with Roberts (yes, very touristy, but we loved it)

    - Snorkeling at Hanauma

    - Pearl Harbor

    - Germaine's Luau

    - EAT: there are so many amazing places to eat. My husband was on a mission to try as many "Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives" places from Food Network that we could get to. It was fun, and we tried some great food, at really reasonable prices.

  • Basically what mdgirl said :)

The only change I'd make is a cat on north shore instead.  They're less booze cruise and more just chill on the water cruise.

If you go to Hanauma, you can get in a small hike at makapu'u lighthouse and hit a windward beach, too.  Or, rather, I can do that b/c I can only handle an hour or 2 at a beach, so I need something else to do with my day.

  • If you go to Hanauma go early- because it gets crowded and fro me that ruins the snorkellign experience.

If you love snorkelling I recommend Wild Side Tours- they have a small group tour- they are a little pricey but well worth it. They took us to places that had no other tour boats around and we saw everything we wanted to pilot whales, dolphins, turtles and of course fish everywhere!

  • We hiked up Diamond Head and it wasn't too bad at all...not hardly a hike just a long trail up and wasn't crowded when we went.

Only thing I don't see mentioned here is scuba diving if you are into it.  We booked an afternoon with oahudiving and the guy was amazing especially considering that was our very first time diving.  There are lots of amazing sea creatures and we got to see a giant sea turtle that was bigger than I was.

  • Have dinner at Alan Wong's.  It's amazing.

Rent a car and take your time driving around, make a lot of pit stops.  Do not miss the shrimp trucks along the north shore.  Our fave was Shrimp Shack.

    Pearl Harbor memorial.

See waterfalls.  And all the beautiful flowers.  There was a nature conservancy park in the north shore area that was worth a visit.

  • My favorite activity on Oahu was our hike to Manoa Falls.  Nothing beats hiking through the rainforest and viewing a waterfall!

I also highly recommend renting a car and taking a leasurely drive around the island, shopping at cool beaches and scenic outlooks whenever it strikes your fancy.  Lanikai Beach is worth a stop -- it's gorgeous!

If you're looking for more of an adventure, rent a kayak in Kailua and paddle out to the bird sanctuary islands.  Fun, neat experience, but exhausting if you're not a strong paddler.

Yes!  H and I went diving for the first time with Oahu Divers (you don't need to be certified) and it was awesome.  The dive we did with them was the reason that we got certified and now we are actually working on our Rescue Diver cert.  Great experience and I highly recommend it if you've ever been interested in diving!

  • Another small thing is to try Dole Whip (pineapple flavored frozen yogurt)!  They have it at the Dole Plantation, obviously, but also in the food court of the International Marketplace on Waikiki.  H and I have yet to find it on any of the other islands.  It's phenomenal!

  • We loved Hawaii!

In Oahu our favorite things were:

    - Germaine's Luau, great food and good show.

    - Pearl Harbor. I'm a huge history buff and loved it! DH is not really into history but really enjoyed visited this site. We went on the USS Missouri, visited the USS Arizona Memorial, and just walked around the different sites.

    - Hiked Diamond Head, it wasn't too difficult and it had a great view!

    Enjoy and have fun!

  • Lots of great suggestions already. I'll add:

    - Byodo-In Temple (lovely grounds to explore...don't make a special trip but if you are over that way, it's serene and relaxing)

    -  Puu O Mahuka heiau (ancient Hawaiian temple ruins) on the north shore. Beautiful, quiet, and gorgeous views of Waimea Bay. An easy stop if you are on the north shore.

    - Shrimp Shacks and shave ice on the north shore

    - browsing shops in Haleiwa (north shore)

    - drive the Tantulus Loop, stopping at the park at the top for excellent views of Honolulu, including Waikiki and Diamond Head.

    - Pali Lookout

We are definitely doing this! We had Dole Whips at Disney on our honeymoon and I loved them!!!!!
