There's a very sweet guy in my hometown; everyone knows him, he's kind of the town uncle if you will. I've known him since we moved there, he was great friends with my mom through her divorce with my dad, baby sat me and my friends. Well, he's gay, and black. Hasn't bothered anyone in the 10 years I lived there but yesterday apparently someone decided to burn his gay pride flag that was flying outside of his home. I'm very thankful that the fire went out and didn't catch anything else(like his home) on fire but I thought my little corn town was better than that. I thought it was the opposite of the stereotype. Apparently not. I'm glad to see the police are actively involved though and he's got an outpouring of support on his facebook.
Here's the article if anyone wants to read it.

Re: I'm incredibly angry
They probably are pretty close but I thought they were pretty open, especially since the college brings in your not so typical farm kids. And yeah, my mom wonders why I don't want to move back and buy her house.
So so sad S. I hope they find who did it.
Its really sad that in most small towns no matter how progressive we would like to think the town we grew up in is, it most likely isn't.
This..
This. And add the shocked face.
Sometimes I have little hope for humanity. Ugh.
