I've posted before about my jawline/neck cystic acne that never seems to go away even with gentle Cetaphil cleanser, pure Jane Iredale makeup, and 50mg daily of spironolactone. Well, I think it's time to see a dermatologist. I'm sick of it. What has your dermo done to help your stubborn acne?
Re: Stubborn hormonal acne
I used to be on minocyclin, but it intefers with the pill. I also DUAC when I need to, prescribed by a derm
Mario Badesco has OTC stuff at ULTA...so far I like the buffering lotion and drying lotion. I would rec it, you can return if you don't, just keep your reciept
I would talk to your doc about upping your Spironolactone. I don't think 50 mg will be that effective. I'm on 75 mg/day and my Derm wants me to go to 100 mg but I'm still a little too lightheaded for that.
Cetaphil cleanser is not the best at removing makeup, IMO. You may need to try something that foams but I know others advise avoiding that. Maybe use Cetaphil in the morning but something that is better at really cleaning your face at night. Also, a Clarisonic will really help.
I'm not sure what you use for birth control but if you use the pill, try skipping the placebos and simply starting the next pack. I used to always flare up around my period - so I just stopped having my period. It worked great and my doc was all for it. It is perfectly safe to do this. You can also just get some Seasonale.
Duac has worked for me in the past, too. I'm on Retin A now but I can only use it every other day. I'm working on getting my face used to it so I can bump it to every day. HTH!

Minocycline was the only thing that got rid of mine.
Just a caution if you plan to skip your placebos, I think this is only safe for certain types of birth control. Talk to you doctor first. I believe you can only do it if you use a birth control that doesn't vary the amount of hormone you get on a week to week basis... if that makes sense
50mg of spiro used to work really well when I first started taking it a couple of years ago. I've had to fight to get my new doctor to refill my prescription of it since she's not the one who originally prescribed it. I'll have to actually go into the office to beg her to do it.
I do use the Olay version of the Clarisonic, but not on a daily basis. I only wear the Jane Iredale powder, so it's not that heavy, but I also sometimes use Olay cleansing wipes for sensitive skin to take off my makeup first. I've used different cleansers in the past (like Obagi, some other "good" one I can't remember the name of, and some drugstore kinds, with and without the salicylic and glycolic acids) but have found that Cetaphil irritates me the least. I'm not on any hormonal BC.
I'm noticing lately that my breakouts are more on my neck than on my face, and I don't use any makeup there. I've used the same body spray forever, so I can't imagine it's that irritating my skin (I use it instead of perfume).
It's so frustrating!
I used to have super bad hormonal acne. I did accutane (twice), retin-A and the whole nine yards. Eventually I got on the right pill and that really helped (Loestrin for awhile and then YAZ). Then I started using this stuff: http://www.paulaschoice.com/category/acne-treatment-clear-skin/ along with regular microderm treatments, it really got rid of it for me.
Now it is mostly gone and all I have to worry about is wrinkles. Sorry you are going thru this, I know how much it sucks.
This stuff totally helped with mine..

They have it available in a gel or liquid.
Topicals won't help cystic acne. It needs to be treated from the inside, because it is stuck inside.
Mine was PAINFUL. I was lucky, and mild antibiotics for three months realllllly helped. A dermatologist will know pretty quickly what will help. They see all kinds of people with all kinds of problems. They will generally want to try more conservative like the antibiotics before accutane. DH did accutane in high school. He says it made his memory disappear, but he does not regret it one bit. He is ultra sensitive to the sun now, but his skin is so clear without scars.
I was prescribed antibiotics and a cream called Aczone to use twice a day. I also got a Clarisonic. I had to quite taking the antibiotics due to some health issues but could keep up with the Aczone. I use Cetaphil with my Clarisoic twice a day. That for me has worked wonders.
It took me two years of trying to get it to clear up on my own and finally one day I had had enough. It took only two months on this routine to get my face to clear up completely! It was amazing and I feel so much better about myself.
Definitely get yourself to the derm!
