We're trying to plan our trip to Denver in June (we have tickets for a Friday and Saturday night to see the Avett Brothers at Red Rocks). Anyone have any advice for us? We are thinking we'd want to stay downtown and rent a car to get out to Red Rocks.

Ready to rumble.
Re: Denver?
Denver resident/lurker here. If you want to stay downtown, the Curtis is one of my favorite hotels. Modern and kind of funky, very cool decor, and located centrally to lots of walking distance attractions. I believe it is Double Tree owned. Nice proximity to light rail as well.
Vesta dipping grill is a great restaurant downtown. Corridor 44 is a nice champagne bar, and if you like mojitos, I love going to Mynt. Euclid Hall is supposed to be very foodie popular, but I've never been. If you'll be renting a car, Trattoria Stella in the Highlands neighborhood is fabulous for brunch/lunch and not very far. If you'll have kids with you, the aquarium is pretty cool and close by. There's also a really great dessert bar called D Bar near downtown that is owned by Chef Keegan (spelling? Not sure) from the food network.
Anyway, hope that helps and have fun!

I could not remember the name of the Brown Palace -- it was driving me crazy all night. My relatives who lived in Boulder liked the Monaco Hotel (or Hotel Monaco?) as well.
I also ate at Elway's and really liked it.
Get blitzed on Pinot Grigio with my aunt.
I'm generally not a fan of concerts, but I do want to go to Red Rocks someday. Jealouse.
Here I am!
I think it is a good plan to stay downtown and rent a car for Red Rocks.
I've stayed at The Oxford. It is really old and cool, but it's haunted. Trust.
I also really liked staying at Magnolia. Their beds were sooo comfortable. It was several years ago, but they would do the milk and cookies thing, and also a wine happy hour. Plus, it is like a block and a half away from my office.
I feel so lame because I haven't been out downtown for too many nice dinners in, oh, 3.5 years. Damn kid cramping my style. For work lunches, I have been to Elway's, Rioja, Ocean Prime (so good!). I know it is a chain, but I really like Earl's. Larimer Square has a bunch of hip, foodie type places.
Eff yeah!
Actually, Iurky-loo over here has been thinking about booking a trip to Denver as well (in July). It was between Denver, Seattle, and PDX, but Denver is so much cheaper out of MSP than the other two.
I'm really excited to do some outdoor hiking and other lame things. Should I stay downtown, or is there a better location for getting out to nature. Are there any cool alpine sled tracks or anything? I'm getting guidebooks but I thought I'd ask Vinny. Thanks!
I love being the Denver know-it-all.
You could stay downtown, but you will end up being in the car a lot.
If you are looking for mostly outdoor activities, I would suggest looking into some of the mountain resort towns. The mountains are beautiful in the summer. Breckenridge/Frisco/Summit County have a bunch of outdoor activities. I am pretty sure Breck has an alpine track. There is a paved path for street biking, but I am sure there are a bunch of trails for mountain biking as well. You can always hike around the slopes in the summer, but the guidebooks will point you in the direction of some real hiking as well (sorry, I'm a lazy city dweller). Breck is a cute town that you can walk around. If you aren't wanting to rent a car while out here, there are shuttles that run from DIA to some of the resort areas and then there are shuttles and buses to get you around the area.
If you aren't interested in going so far away from the city, you could look into Boulder or Golden. There are plenty of hiking options in the foothills. Near (perhaps in) Golden, there is a place called Heritage Square (it is very close to Red Rocks). This has an alpine slide. I haven't been there in years, but I remember it being fun. If you do Golden, you could take a tour of Coors Brewery. I have never done it (even though I grew up a couple of miles from it, and could catch a smell of the brewing process frequently), but people love it.
Red Rocks is also really cool to hike around when there isn't a concert going on. You can actually get into the theater. People run the steps (it is a CRAZY good workout). It is also nice to sit there in the evening and see the moon rise over the city.
Boulder is a good mix for "city"/outdoorsy activities. The summer is great there because most of the college kids are gone.
I would suggest renting a car if you stay anywhere, but you will especially want one if you stay in Boulder or Golden.
Okay, I will end my novel here. Happy planning! Let me know if you have any other questions.
I'm going to have to disagree with you there L.
While I do like their food, 1. they are stupid busy, even at 11:00 on a Tuesday, and 2. they do not serve Diet Coke (stupid organic crap).
While, I can handle a short wait, them passing off their strange hippy soda as Diet Coke is just crossing a line.
Plus, I'm a stubborn ass, and the hype for that place is just weird.
But, if you aren't a Diet Coke-head and/or agoraphobic, it is fine.
Thanks so much Vinny, that is super helpful! Denver sounds like a mix of me- I want to do some outdoors-y stuff, but I also want to come back and night and go to a nice restaurant and have a bottle (or four) of wine. I'm going to look into those resort towns!
ETA: Oops I meant Boulder sounds like the perfect mix
