I'm pretty sure the last time I played was when I was 14. I took a tennis lesson once a week for about a year. I saved my racket and somehow even had it at my house, so when a friend asked if I wanted to play during spring break I decided to go for it. It was so much fun! We both totally sucked at first, then we got a bit better, then as we got tired we got bad again. It was a lot of fun and it felt like a pretty good workout (I think it will be a better workout when we improve). We're lucky that there are free courts to use.
Does anyone else play tennis? Are there any exercises you would recommend to help us improve? I've been running (slowly) about 2-3 days a week and going for a bike ride once a week and that's about it.

Re: Played tennis for the first time in 20 years!
Awesome! There is nothing like playing tennis in the sunshine! My DH is a D1 college coach, so I have the luxury of being on a court or watching tennis almost daily
.
I would rec checking local racquet clubs for drop in drills. It's cheaper than a private lesson, and you'll get to hit a ton of balls. Sharing an hour on a ball machine with friends will also give you lots of chances to smack some balls around.
Unless you're aiming for 5.0 serious tournament play, I would say general fitness is best for tennis fitness - just do things you enjoy. You might consider working some fast twitch muscles, doing things like suicides, if you're so inclined.
Just get out there and enjoy the great lifelong sport!

At this point I can hardly get the ball over the net and my arm is killing me after a 1 hour practice, but that would be awesome if you want to share! Eventually I will get there!
Sore is good!! If you're having fun, it doesn't matter your skill level!
Colo Spgs Racquet Club on Murray is the club where my DH & I grew up, and it perfect for the casual player.
In Denver, check out Gates & DTC for their non-member options (unless, of course, you're looking to join clubs).
Usually for drills, lessons, & courts a club will have two prices, a nonmember & member price. But, the park is always free

congrats on getting back on the court

I love tennis!
The hubs and I try to play when we can during the summer. I was actually looking at our local rec dept. website yesterday looking for tennis lessons. I've always wanted to take them.
I am even more sore today, but it feels good! My glutes are killing me. I'll attempt a slow 3 mile run just to warm up the muscles a bit. We're going to play again Saturday and can't wait! Fortunately the courts where we played at the park never seem to be crowded, and I hope it stays like that. Also there's a playground to keep my friend's daughter occupied and nice shady trees for my dog to hang out under and take a nap. For now we'll keep playing there. It's also about a 10 second walk from the school where we work, so after spring break we'll go play after school.
