I have a friend trying to talk me into doing a sprint tri (she has also never done one), but I have some questions.
I run regularly 3 days a week, but I don't have access to a pool, and I only have a mountain bike but I do have slicks for it. Is it silly of me to even consider doing one? Would it be frowned upon to use a mountain bike instead of a road bike? Will I die on the swim???
I would love to hear others experiences with this!

Re: Sprint Triathlon?
I did one years ago and I used a mountain bike...but I got lapped by people! It was humbling!!! And running after biking is kind of tricky - my legs felt like jello so I was thankful it was only 3 miles!!! I didn't even finish near the top (or the middle, ha!) but it was still an exciting race to do. I didn't specifically train for the swimming part b/c I am a pretty strong swimmer anyway. The day of my race should have been sunny and 80 (July) but it was cool and very windy and the water was really rough.
Even though it sounds like I had a terrible time, it was actually quite fun. I would do another one, but not until my kids are a bit older and I can spend more time on it.

If you are comfortable with trying one, Id say go for it! As PP posters said, be warned about the bike to run transition - your legs will feel like jelly for probably the first mile or so.
Re: swimming. If you can get in some pool time before the race, even a teeny bit, that is ideal. Also if its an open water swim and you arent used to that try and mentally prepare yourself now for not being able to see the bottom (that kind of freaked me out during my first open water race, coming from my college swimming background and always being used to seeing the bottom, walls, etc).
Good luck and be warned...tris are addicting!!
zachary happens!
Thanks! I think I'm most concerned with the swim because I basically don't swim. I haven't really swam since I was a kid, but I know how to get from point a to point b even if I look spastic doing it.
It is in a pool so I feel more comfortable about that. Not sure I would want to try an open water swim ever!
It's not until July so I have some time to decide and figure out where I can get some swimming time in.
