Mod podge on painted wooden box?

I know that many people use this product as a sealer, but I just noticed that the label said to use another sealer to "reduce tackiness."

Do I really need to do this? I have only used it for paper before and didn't think it dried tacky at all,  so I figured I could also use it to seal this box. I haven't applied the mod podge yet, so I don't know if it's "too tacky."

FWIW the entire box is painted; there is no exposed wood left on it. I would like to avoid using a wood sealer b/c of the fumes (pregnant and 3 birds in the house plus H gets headaches), so if you think mod podge is not suitable, I'd love it if you could recommend a different product. I know I saw a soy sealer at the craft store but know nothing at all about that or even if it's meant for wood.

Re: Mod podge on painted wooden box?

  • Are you looking for something to protect the paint ? If it is painted you need a top coat, not a sealer.

There are water based finish coats for wood, that can be used over paint.  I think you can even get water based clear coat finishes in the crafts paint aisles at Michaels.

This! I've used the DecoArt one on wood.

I guess? I have used mod podge to do decoupage on wood boxes and thought it turned out fine, so I just presumed I'd use the same thing over the paint.

I'm sure it would turn out fine, and it is appropriate for use over decoupage, but you could do better for something that is just wood or painted wood, and doesn't involve paper or fabric.

  • Whenever I use mod podge, it always turns out tacky, so I spray it with a clear coat of spray paint or the sealant mod podge in a spray that's not glue, it just seals.
