Is this a dumb question?

Can I FaceTime from an iPad to a computer using Skype? Why isn't this simple?
Do I have to have FaceTime on the computer for it to be free? Can I get FaceTime on a PC? I downloaded the Skype app on the iPad, but it's not picking up the video feed from my computer.

Re: Is this a dumb question?

  • I have no idea.  But just to make you not feel so dumb, it took me like ten minutes to figure out how to clip my new ipod onto my shirt.

You can FaceTime from iPhone to iPhone, IPad to iPad or iPad to iPhone.

I have the Skype ap on my iPad and it took a few tries but it does work. The camera feed kid of sucks though.

As far as I know you can't FaceTime from a computer. But I haven't tried it.

  • OK, I'm glad it's not glaringly obvious and simple. I was worried you guys would be pointing and laughing at me. I'll keep trying the skype app, I can hear the computer, see myself in another little window at the bottom, but the video of the computer person never loads in the main screen. And I'm the one setting up both the computer and the ipad, it's all so very meta. There's lots of Hezzer and echo and feedback. And I think I just saw a black cat walk by the staircase twice. Woah, deja vu.
  • My H and I do this regularly when I'm out of the country (on his iPad and my computer) and we've never had a problem. The only thing I can think of is to try checking your settings on the Skype app (sometimes on my computer it will auto shut off video if it thinks the connection is too slow), and make sure your iPad is using the front facing camera rather than the rear facing one.  Also, I think you can only facetime computer to iProduct if the computer is an Apple one, and has the built in camera.
  • I used the skype app on my phone with my parents (who were using skype on their computer). I think it took a few minutes to figure out the settings but eventually we did get it work.
