If you were preparing a kit for a homeless couple

What would you put in it? There is a couple living in the ally behind my building. I don't want to come off condescending like here are your bootstraps but so far I have a backpack and one of those emergency blankets. What food is non perishable that will keep in the backpack? I'm going to the corner market in an hour or two. Thanks in advance!

  • A tent. Meatsticks. Tuna. Mustard. Bread. Squeeze cheese...
  • I'd also put no water needed cleaning wipes in the bag. And maybe something fun like fancy cookies or something.
  • Feminine products, a razor, beef jerky, crackers
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • toothpaste and toothbrushes. Maybe deoderent?

  • First aid kit.

  • This probably shows how out of touch I am, but I'd try to include chapstick, polysporin, a toothbrush, fresh socks and fresh underwear.
  • Definitely some clean socks. As for food- one thing we gave out at the shelter I worked was peanut butter. Shelf stable and a protein.
  • We did this one particularly cold winter.  My dad and I made bedrolls with 1 tarp, 1 wool blanket (found them at a surplus store for super cheap), and a couple of trash bags.  Tied it together with nylon straps and attached them to backpacks. In the backpack, we put 2 pr of socks, 2 large bottles of water, some pop top cans of tuna, vienna sausages, a couple of sleeves of crackers, and then some gift cards ($5 each) to McDs.

  • Thanks so much for the ideas. This is great stuff.

  • I ditto gift cards. Maybe even a visa card if you felt like they would get what they needed with it? And ditto socks - maybe tshirts?

  • Peanut butter & jelly, bread, granola bars, packages of dried fruit, crackers, wipes, deodorant, toothpaste, hand warmers (during the winter), bottles of waters, bug spray (during the summer), list of phone numbers to charities & soup kitchens in the area, disposable rain coats, ziploc bags, instant drink mixes (the kind you put in a bottle of water), blankets, gloves, hats, sunglasses, scarves, gift cards to places where they can get coffee or meals.

This. I'd also get some bottles of Tylenol and Advil. First aid kits usually only have a dose or two.

Do you have a local charity that helps homeless?  I would call them and donate and let them know these people are there and might need help.  They are far better prepared to help them.  For instance, my local charity travels the streets all day and night in search of homeless and give out a bag of fresh groceries, or give them on the spot medical or psychiactric care, or fresh clothes for work (most of our homeless have jobs but can't afford the insane rents).  I would assume that they have jobs and focus on hygeine-deoderant, soap, laundry detergent, and maybe fresh socks and underwear.
  • I think I scared them away with my earnestness. They've been gone since I got back from the market:( There is no shortage of homeless to give the bag to but I felt bad for these people and they were right behind my apartment.

  • A can opener.

We have a homeless guy who comes to our door every now and then to ask H to open his canned goods that he was given by soup kitchens around here. I keep meaning to pick up an extra one to give him but I forget.

Of all the simple things these people don't have. This breaks my heart.

  • Yeah, he usually comes by between 1 and 3 in the morning. H is a night owl so he doesn't mind. The guy usually has a couple cans of chili or vegetables or something. H usually opens them, dumps them into a container we don't mind giving up. Sometimes he adds meat from our fridge for the guy and a couple slices of bread.

Once he came by with cream of mushroom soup and I felt so bad for him that I gave him the leftovers I was planning to use for the next night's dinner. I mean who eats plain cream of mushroom soup? The least I could do is give him some chicken thighs to go with it since they were already cooked and right there.

  • If it gets cold where you are maybe you could include some of those hand warmers you get for hunting/camping.  If you check the camping aisles at the store there are some great little things that would be good to include in a kit.
