1/2 a mile into my run . . .

my iPhone falls and the screen shatters into 8 million tiny pieces.

I ran 4 more miles because I was pissed. Hey, Pandora and my Distance Keeper still work . . .

Re: 1/2 a mile into my run . . .

  • Ughhhh that's the worst!

I broke mine about a month after I got it, by dropping it in the garage when I was carrying a bunch of stuff. I frantically Googled to find out what to do: make an appointment at the Genius Bar in the Apple store (the appointment is key!), then take it in and be very polite... and they just MAY hand you a new phone for free. It worked for me. (Otherwise, it's $199 for a replacement.)

This is why I'm terrified to run with my phone -- I'm sure I would drop it, and my next replacement definitely wouldn't be free!

Best of luck getting a (free) new one.

What if I didn't get mine from Apple? I'm skeptical of this occurring at my local store . . . they're pretty stuck up.

  • That sucks! Just dropped my Droid a few days ago and the screen shattered. Of course I did not get the insurance. And of course I'm not eligible for an upgrade until November. $450 later, I got a new phone. UGH!!

  • Thanks, ladies. We found a place near us that fixed it in 45 minutes for $120. Honestly, I didn't want to spend the money, but I want the phone and I didn't want to wait to get to my Genuis Bar and hope they gave me a free phone (which DH and I kinda doubted they'd do.) This place was closer and faster. DH, who usually overreacts when stuff like this happens, reminded me that this is just a thing and we're fortunate for me to be able to fix it, so to not be upset. But to definitely be more careful on my future runs.

  • I feel your pain. My iPhone is currently being held together with a lot of tape since I shattered the back. I'm glad you were able to get it fixed quickly.

For those who got their phone replaced for free what did you say to the rep?

I accidentally buried my Samsung in the junk mail and threw it in the trash compactor cracking the screen.  I was able to send it to Samsung and they fixed it for $120ish.  It was a lot but less than a new phone.

  • If your Iphone is less than a year old they will replace it for free. Even if you didn't get the insurance, you still have the Apple Warranty.  If it's more than a year old then you can pay to replace it or if you have the insurance, you just pay your deductible.  The reason they have you go to an Apple Store is because your provider isn't authorized to fix your phone in anyway, when you take it to the store and they see that they can't fix it, they'll give you a new one.

With some googling - you can actually buy replacement kits for the glass. My H busted the back of his and just bought a new glass piece. If you don't have a warranty it's worth a shot! Just make sure you read reviews, lots of bad kits out there.

  •  friend cracked the back of his iPhone and it was only $30 to fix.
  • I'm sorry! FWIW when my DH broke my screen last month (yep HIS fault) the Genius at Apple replaced mine for $149.

Also, he runs with this MarWare armband. You slide out the backplate, slide in the phone, then seal it back up (its a 3-piece set). That way it cannot fall off his arm.

This.  My fiance works for Sprint as a technician.  They have to send out the Iphones to repair.  So you would have to take it to apple to be replaced.  I am not sure how other phone companies have to fix Iphones but I would think they would all be the same.

  • That's stinks! I'm glad you were able to get it repaired.

My little free-5-years-ago-flip-phone comes with me when I ride. (Stupid Blackberry is provided by work, and I don't work on the bike...hahahahaaaa.)

This happened to me and it was only $30 at Genius Bar.  I told them the truth - that I dropped it - and they just fixed it for me.  No new phone necessary.
