NEED a vacation quickly

DH and I haven't gone on a vacation since our honeymoon over 7 years ago. We had every intention of going on a trip before baby #1 (which never happened) so we'd really like to get away for a short trip before baby #2. We figure it will be easier to convince the grandparents to watch 1 baby vs. 2. Stick out tongue

We went to an AI in Mexico on our honeymoon so we're thinking Carribbean this time. Either an AI or a cruise (which neither of us have ever done). We'd like to go for 3-4 nights and just relax and spend time together, something we rarely get to do anymore. We don't have a budget, so we're pretty open to all ideas. We like to go out and have fun, but a hopping night life isn't mandatory given my current condition.

I would love to hear some suggestions! To be honest, I've never planned a vacation before, so I don't even know where to start, which is what ultimately killed the plans pre-baby 1. I don't want that to happen again.

  • cruises have pregnancy restrictions so you need to check those out before booking anything.

when do you plan on going? since you only have 3-4 days you'll have to try to fly someplace close/non-stop. where are you flying from?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I didn't know that about cruises! We'd like to go within the next couple of months, before I'm much further along. Our jobs are pretty flexible to allow us to pack up and go whenever. We'd fly out of Detroit, so if we cruise we'd probably leave out of Miami? I have no idea. I hadn't considered the travel time, so we could add another day on for that.

  • i dont know much about flying out of detroit but i really enjoy puerto rico. it's a pretty large airport and takes direct flights from jfk and others. old san juan is fun to walk around-old spanish colonial architecture, great restaurants-a nice day exploring. i've stayed at the caribe hilton (10 mins from OSJ) and the water club (20  mins ). i liked them both. water club is a small boutique place with a great beach, rooftop pool, great huge beach beds, and a nice lounge. caribe had a great pool area.

anyway-that was my first thought. good luck!

I was going to say the exact same thing! I believe that Delta has several seasonal routes from Detroit to the Caribbean but by this point the "seasonal" period might be over. If that is the case, then you are going to ultimately have to incur a layover, which will probably result in your total flight time adding up to 8-10 hours. Since you are only planning on going for 3-4 days, this will eat up a big chunk of your time. Could you go for even a day or two longer to maximize your travel time?

Many places in the Caribbean have AIs including Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Antigua. I would recommend checking out www.costcotravel.com as they often have great package prices. Puerto Rico has a few AIs, but if you visited I wouldn't recommend staying in an AI as the food there is supposed to be amazing.

  • I would recommend subscribing to Travelzoo and checking out their deals (they rally up the best for the week and do a Top 20).

Since you only have a few days, an AI might be nice and relaxing. Cheapcarribean.com will usually have some great hotels deals and packages and you can use tripadvisor.com or another website to read reviews before you buy.

There are also a lot of great spots in the US if you want to save time, $ and if you have any complications, you're covered. Some places to consider: Key West, Hilton Head SC, Southern Cali & Fort Lauderdale.

Best of luck booking your vaca!! Generally it's best to book on Tuesdays after 3pm til Wed/Thursday, and the best fly days are those days too if you do have the option of picking.

  • With that short of time, I'd skip the cruise. You'd end up at sea for most of it and likely only hit one port.

  • At this point it looks like you are past the point of being able to cruise according to your ticker. The cutoff for cruising when pregnant is 24 weeks-at least it is with both Carnival and RCCL.
