Any Army Infantry Officer's Wives Out There?

My husband is currently Air Force Enlisted Active Duty and he wants to finish his enlistment next year, finish his remaining college and join Army Infantry as an officer. I was an Army brat and my father came in light infantry. He's always talked about how he hated it, they were constantly on alert, and they were treated like dirt. I'm also Air Force active duty (my enlistment would be up by the time my husband commissioned) and I've asked co-workers if they knew anyone Army Commissioned Infantry and I've heard nothing but negatives about it. The last thing I would want is to step in the way of my husband and what he wants to do, of course any wife would want to be supportive, but it would be so helpful to get some advice from someone who is an Army officer's wife or know anyone first hand. My main concerns: What's the quality of life like? Will my husband be deployed alot? (usually AF officers get at least one 1 year tour but deployment frequencies are pretty predictable) My husband wants to be infantry because he likes all the cool field training, is it all that it's cracked up to be? I really just want him to be happy but I have a bad feeling it's not what he's expecting it to be. If anyone has any input I'll be happy to hear it. Thank you!!!

Re: Any Army Infantry Officer's Wives Out There?

  • My husband isn't an officer but he was infantry the first 10 years, he's now in a communications/computer MOS. It honestly depends on the person, he liked it and really enjoyed the relationship he had with his guys but he was just ready to move on. Also, deployment schedules and what not will depend on what unit he goes to. I will tell you that going blue to green, especially E to O is a bit tricky right now. The Army is super full(as are most branches) and they're being super selective, there's always a chance they'll take him but not for infantry. A friend of mine(FancyFace, if she comes around) has had her H been going to the boards and MEPS and all the nonsense to go AF E to Army O and it's been almost 2 years now. I'm not saying it's not possible but a) it's really hard b) he should have a back up branch in mind.

  • ARMY Infantry Officers only get to do all the Hooah stuff until they make CPT then its desk work. My husband was branched infantry and did field work for like 8 months back in the states then down range but when he got home his platoon leader time was up and it was time for him to move to the staff.

Like the PP said he has to be selected to go infantry they just don't allow you to choose what you want to do even in the officers side of things.

My husband isn't Infantry but he is working for an Infantry unit and this has been his experience as well. He still enjoys it, but he liked platoon leader life a lot more.

That would depend on the type of unit they are in.  I can tell you it isn't like that across the board.

  • My husband is a 11bravo, not an O. He loves his job but really I think it just depends on what unit you go through and how you make of it.  And like PP's have said, it's hard for most O's to get their selected branch, part of the reason why my H enlisted instead. Also, where does all this negativity surrounding the infantry come from? I've met some of the most amazing, smartest guys from my husband's unit, they're all very respectable men. I'm beyond proud of what they all do.

  • My husband is Army O infantry...... he loves it down range but gets pretty fed up with paper work fast when back in the states. He loves going to the field( we are one of the big training facilities so they are out there working on the kinks and such when other units come). Depends on the person and I know he is worried about he paper work aspect of it after cpt. He also knows that because they are shrinking above cpt that promotions could be more diff. ect.

This. MH was an infantry officer for 5 years before switching MOS. When he was in the field he LOVED it. But the reality is, as an officer you only get to do that stuff for so long. He got to have a platoon for a year. Then he spent the rest of the time being a staff officer and an XO. You may get a little more action as a company commander. But deployments are slowing down and most of the time spent in garrison is dealing with paperwork and putting out fires.

DH isn't infantry but his best friend is. He ends up working late nights a lot more often than H but that definitely varies from unit to unit. I agree with the PP that deployments are enjoyed but stateside it's not exactly the same. He deployed for a year to Iraq and got home in August or September. By the end of this year they plan on redeploying them to Afghanistan so yes, he's currently deploying frequently. However, he switched duty stations with another soldier because the location he was originally assigned to did not have any upcoming deployments for two years. Also keep in mind that we're projected to pull out of Afghanistan in 2014 so your H may not be deploying there (if that was one of his goals).

  • Negativity: I've heard Army doesn't treat their people well and they don't get as good of gear, living quarters and other benefits AF gets in the deployed environment. Like I said my dad was Enlisted Army Light Infantry and of course he's a respectable man and made life long friend ships through his experence but it just wasn't for him.

Please explain in more detail how the AF is better to their people than the Army in deployed environments.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

My H is an O and was branch detailed Infantry for his first 3 years in. He had similar experiences to those listed. He liked it when he was a PL but the rest was just a lot of late nights and paperwork. Every unit is different, though.

Stan- When my H was deployed (Army), their DFAC had a pancake bar but didn't have blueberries. I bet the AF had blueberries. But other than that minor problem, he had great equipment, his own personal bedroom and office with his own coffee pot, and A/C and internet that worked 80% of the time!

DH is deployed with an Army unit right now and has the most swanky living arrangement he's ever had. In fact, his room is nicer than the dorm room I lived in my freshman year of college.

I'm sorry, I have to admit I literally laughed out loud when I read this. Why would you bet the AF had blueberries? This seems like such an odd defense of AF treating their people better than the Army during deployment.

It was a joke. I guess my humor doesn't translate well on the internet.
