Cruise to Bahamas out of Baltimore?

Has anyone done this? I am already looking in to vacations for next year and this is an option. DH won't fly, and Baltimore is drivable, so we would be using that as are departing port.  Are these cruises worth it? Do we get any time in the Bahamas or does it fly?TIA!

Re: Cruise to Bahamas out of Baltimore?

  • for what time of year? how many days is it? how many days in bahamas (that will tell you if you get any time there)?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • 7 day cruise, March 3-10, 2013 with Carnival. Two days in Bahamas, one is from 11am to 10pm in one town, then 7am-2pm in another. we also stop in florida for a day.

I guess what I am asking is will we feel rushed?

  • imo you'll only feel rushed if you try to cram too much into the days. you have 4 sea days which is nice-that'll be your relaxing time. if you want a cruise with more stops consider taking a longer cruise or train down toflorida for a cruise that leaves from there.

a few beward ofs: it's generally cold in march. bahamas are not caribbean and can be chilly that time of year-never mind the trip down there. that's also peak spring break season. just be aware.

  • Well darn, no beach time it sounds like then. There doesn't seem to be any caribbean cruises that leave baltimore, Unfortunately, and we cant get enough time off to take a train to FL and then a cruise.  I want to go somewhere different next year than we usually go, (normally we go in May and go to Myrtle or Virginia beach, this year we are going to Gatlinburg, TN) but with him not flying it makes it difficult. I wish I could just beat him over the head with a baseball bat and drag him on a plane!

  • you can drive to florida in less than a day. if you were going to do a 7 day cruise maybe do a 5 day from FL and use th other 2 days for driving?

just out of curiosity-why wont he fly?

  • He is petrified of heights and just won't. Thats the only reason I have gotten in 11 years.  He SAYS if its somewhere we can't drive to, he will fly, but it has to not be drivable (and somewhere he wants to go, IE: Brazil, whichwe just can't afford right now)

  • wow-if it's somewhere HE really wants to go he'll put his fear aside? eek!

    anyway-good luck.

  • i've been to the bahamas many times in mid-March and the weather has always been great - 80s and sunny.  Cool at night.  I'd be more concerned about the weather if it was jan or feb.

it's the actual "cruising" part is what would stop me though.  I love to cruise, but Baltimore is definitely not beach weather in March and your journey down the coast isn't going to be very warm/pool side.

  • Ive been to the bahamas in Feb and laid out by the pool - it was fine.

  • I cruised to the Bahamas the first week of March in college and the weather was perfect. We went to the beach and had a great time. My only concern with that time is that the ship will probably have a lot of college kids on spring break so that may be something for you to consider.

  • I've been to the Bahamas in January, February and March of different years. January was a little on the cool side, but February and March were fine.

Does the ship have lots to do? I'm not a big fan of the Bahamas in general, but I also like cruising for the ship more than the itinerary. I'd go if it was on a big ship with lots to do. I also like the idea of driving to Florida and doing a five day out of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

  • We love to cruise out of NYC in winter but take the 9-11 trips to the Carribbean b/c you lose at least the 1st & last day to the cold weather.

Cruises are about time on the ship. You never have enough time in the ports.  It's a overview not an in-depth exploration.

You may also get lucky & we'll have a mild March like this year or you could have snow on the deck the day you leave.

Before you book make sure that you are happy being on the ship & not doing much else.
