Help me decide on a new car.
I have been telling myself that I really wanted a Tahoe, but I am not sure I want the price tag along with that unless I find a used one for a decent price. I need the space but I do not want a van, and good gas milage since we live about 30min from our nearest Walmart, and 20min to the nearest doctor.
So what do you drive and how do you like it? What is your gas milage?
Re: Help me decide on a new car.
2006 Kia Sorrento. I love my car but the gas gets pricey when prices are like they are now. We paid close to $80 the other day to fill it up. I drive to and from work every day and come home for lunch. My car is our "family car" so if we go anywhere we take it. I get about 2 weeks out of a tank of gas. I try to limit my extra trips and do grocery shopping on my way home from work, ect.
Oh its seats 5 and has a fairly ample amount of cargo space.
I drive an '09 Hyundai Santa Fe-- their crossover/smaller SUV. I really wanted a Ford Edge but they were out of my price range.
The Santa Fe gets the best gas mileage of the ones I looked at (Escape, Milan, Toyota's version etc). I get around 28mpg on the Highway and around 22-24 city driving. The seats are really easy to flip up and down but when they are down then don't lay completely flat. There is also a sweet hidden storage in the way back. You can keep the lid open for groceries. It road better than the Escape but I never got a chance to test drive a used Milan or Toyota. It's not super quiet but that wasn't a priority for me. I wanted an SUV for my Dog's crate.
I got it as a certified pre-owned from a Hyundai dealership so it came with a 6 year/60,000 mile warranty. Best for used vehicle I could find.
Before I arrived at this vehicle I did a lot of comparing at www.edmunds.com they also have user reviews on the site too.
HTH
We have a 2011 Mini Cooper. The new 4 doors are awesome. It gets 38 mpg. Love everything about it. My BFF has a 4 door Mini and it's been awesome for her.
Our other car is 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is fully loaded, DVD player and all, it only gets about 19 mpg but it also has the full size V8 5.7L Hemi. It's a great vehicle, we have 122K miles on it and not a single issue(other than dead battery but that happens). 4x4 is great to have and it is a comfy ride.
LOL I guess I should have said I had a 2003 Santa Fe. It fit our needs but if we were to have another child, or needed to have another adult in the car there would be no room lol.
The new sorrentos (sp) have gotten better with gas and so has the Ford Edge.
I love the new Jeep Grand Cherokee too. We have a Ram and a Mazda 3, so neither of our cars would work lol.
I think the Ford Flex is a great alternative to a van. The 2nd row has captain seats which lead to the 3rd row. I have never ridden in one but they look pretty IMO.
The biggest thing with SUV's is looking at how the seat is in the middle of your 2nd row. If it's a weird jumpseat it's useless for adults and then of course car seats. Some cars don't have center tether bars so if that's important to you be sure to look into it. I personally like using them instead of having to use just the seat belt.
I got an SUV but after about 6 months I realized that my hips were messed up from getting into and out of the vehicle. So, I regretted buying and SUV that required the step-up to get into. I ended up getting a different vehicle and my hips are back to normal for the most part 1 year later. I still have some issues but yea. Weird, huh? !
Edmunds is a great place to compare vehicles.
And, kelly blue book also has a feature to compare pricing for buying used and new and personal versus retailer.
ahah. 2 of my aunts have the Traverse (next sixe up) with 3rd row seating. But the 3rd row sucks- it takes up the entire cargo space and adults sit with their knees in their chest.
I was thinking ours would fit for at least baby#1 and then perhaps we can afford the edge by #2.
I've heard good things about the GMC Arcadia but I'm pretty sure they are very spendy. Might be one to put on your list to check out though.
Photo bomb, yeah!
H has a Chevy Silverado. I have a Chrysler Town and Country Minivan. I love my van. I have a ton of storage. Plus, it was the only vehicle that would fit all 6 of us, all of our suitcases and a dog when we travel. I get 28mpg.
Wow! That's amazing for a van, not that I have a need for one, but I recall a girlfriend complaining about closer to 22mpg. Something to keep in mind!
Yeah, I've been really impressed with this van.
We are looking to have a 3rd child in our future, we also have 2 dogs. I also want something that we can put a towing package on. Not to mention car pooling around our area. Plus we like the space were we wont feel cramped.
I'd recommend a Subaru Outback. It fits three carseats in the back, the cargo area is enough for all three of my dogs (and a fourth, if the need arises), and you can get a towing package. Gas mileage in the high 20s, AWD, and you're not paying to drive around a huge vehicle that's not being utilized to its fullest potential the majority of the time.
In the rare event we need more space, we use a rooftop carrier. It's silly to drive a larger car every single day, paying those gas prices and being a general nuisance to the small cars on the road for the occassional trips that require every family member, every dog, and more space for gear.
So that's my suggestion. An Outback.
