Am I crazy or was TIP talking about Kindle Fire recently?

My bday is in a few weeks and trying to decide if I want the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet. Posted on SO about it but no one is telling me WHY they chose what they did.

Thought you ladies were having a discussion on this recently so I decided to pop on over to TIP.....

  • Amazon is offering refurbed Kindle Fires for $145 atm, so.

I have a Nook Color (not the Tablet).  I chose it because I got it last March before the Fire was a thing.  I do love it, but if I were buying it today, I'd get a Kindle in a heartbeat.

I love my Kindle.  And because I prefer Amazon x100000 over B&N, I'd say Kindle Fire!

  • Short answer: more sh*t.

Long answer: B&N only went digital because the writing was on the wall in terms of print vs digital, and now there are rumblings about them spinning off the e-division altogether.  Amazon has more money to subsidize their readers, has better infrastructure to provide e-support, and also operates like Amazon usually does with pricing... it is very rare I see a Nook book for cheaper than a Kindle book.

Anecdote-wise, initially the Fire was going to be an Android tablet like the Nook.  Except, Google demanded ALL of Amazon's user data in exchange for the Android license.  Bezos told them to f*ck themselves, and the Fire's OS was built from scratch.  I really like that.

    And, I lied. They're $139.

I am so anti-kindle because of the whole censorship debacle. Amazon went into an agreement in open court saying they wouldn't remove anymore of their customers purchases and then went ahead and pulled a bunch of people's erotica. I just don't trust Amazon anymore. If grown @ss adults want to have erotica on their ereaders I don't think it's anybody's place to censor them.

I've had my Kindle for 2 years and have never had anything removed. Amazon's customer service is second to none and the product is just better.  And it's nice to have Amazon's great prices and variety to deal with rather than B&N.

I think the only paid erotica they pulled involved pedophilia themes.

However, I have noticed that some of the free erotica I've downloaded disappears, then when I go to find it on Amazon, it's no longer free. To me, it's not a huge deal, since there's a shitton of free erotica available on the web, and if Amazon wants to only give it to me for a limited time, who am I to complain? I didn't pay for it in the first place.

  • Whelp, now we know that imoan doesn't download erotica. Not the free stuff, at least.

No, some of the paid erotica they deleted had homosexual themes.

  • I haven't seen a credible source that confirmed that. And there is still plenty of homosexual erotica available on Amazon.

By the way, I was just re-reading the NYT article you originally posted about this like a year ago.  I'm a little confused... it says copies of the HP series were removed.  HP wasn't available in e-form until 2 days ago.  This article is from 2009.  I think a lot of this is just conspiracy theory crap.  If anyone DID have a copy of HP, they had it illegally... as at the time this article was written... it was THREE YEARS AWAY!

  • Thanks Broc and imoan! That is definitely something to think about as to why the Fire is a better choice!

  • I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas and I love it. I use it instead of my laptop when I'm at home. And it travels well, especially if you can pick up some Wi-Fi somewhere and save on your phone data usage.
