stove right next to fridge?

We're going to demo the kitchen in our new place, but when we configured the new setup, the stove is right next to the fridge, with no cabinet in between or anything. DH doesn't think this will be an issue and a kitchen designer set it up for us.

Do you see this causing any problems? My mom thinks the heat from the stove might make the fridge work harder, but I don't think the stove would give off heat from the sides....but I have no clue

Thanks

Re: stove right next to fridge?

  • I wouldn't like that.  I want space on either side of the stove.  When we're cooking a lot of stuff at once and things are tight, handles have to go off the side, etc.  I really can't imagine it being RIGHT UP against the fridge.

  • Ditto PP.  I definitely keep the handles turned to the outside of the stove, and sometimes I'm using all burners at once, so I could see losing the open counter space next to the stove as tough.
  • I wouldn't like that, also because the heat from the stove will make the refrig. work harder.
  • I wouldn't like it.  I like to have somewhere to set things when I am cooking on either side of the stove.  Plus you might bump your arms into the fridge when you are cooking.  Good luck on the renos!

This brings to mind too- left/right handedness.  As a righty, I tend to use the right side of the stove the most to set stuff down, etc.  DH is a lefty, he tends to go to the left.

Put a fridge on either side - one of us is going to be highly annoyed.

But that aside, I still think it would be really awkward.  It's like putting a wall right next to your stove.

That reminds me, in the old kitchen, we had a wall right next to the stove. I'm righty, H is lefty. We didn't have any problem with it even though sometimes I used all 4 burners

  • When I am cooking, especially big meals, I use the counters on both sides of my stove. I would not want to lose one of those counters and would feel cramped for space.
  • We have only a narrow cabinet between our stove and wall. But I think it is essential. I would miss that space, even though I don't use it for much. I would either try to add something between the two appliances or else see if another layout would be better all together.
  • 1) If I was renovating my kitchen I would try my hardest to get a perfect cooking "triangle" between the sink, stove, and fridge.

    2) Our very first rental had a super tiny galley kitchen and the stove was right next to the fridge. It was gross to keep clean (spaghetti sauce splashed down the side created a lovely adventure in cleaning). I don't know if it made the fridge work harder, but it was kind of awkward and made it hard for other people to get things out of the fridge when someone was cooking (but that was compounded by the tiny galley kitchen aspect. I couldn't even open the oven all the way).

And, for future resale value, I think it might be something that bothered potential buyers.

  • Actually my parents' are like that- stove being right next to the fridge. It was never a hassle for us, I grew up with that. Not a big deal for us, but obviously it depends on what you prefer.

  • I would really try to change that arrangement. I could live with the arrangement if I wasn't spending money on a reno, but you are. We just completed a major kitchen renovation and one thing we made sure to add was counterspace around the stove.  Unless you are going with a counter depth fridge, having it right next door would be even more annoying.  If you get a side by side or a French door model would you be able to open the doors fully?
  • If you have a chance to change it, do it. My kitchen (rental house) is set up like that and I hate it. I need to have counter space on either side to put things. Like other PP said, the side of the refrigerator gets dirty.

In our current place (rental) we have a wall beside the stove, so annoying! DH and I are both right handed and the wall was on the left and we still had problems. Not to mention trying to keep the wall clean all the time.

  • I also just wanted to add that it can make it hard to clean the inside of the oven, if the fridge sticks out a little more. I noticed this when cleaning the oven today with a wall beside it. The fridge may not be quite as bad though.

  • It makes your fridge less efficient/more costly to run.
