Oh wise P&CE: I'm probably getting a marketing assistant and need your advice.

I was once a manager for about five months way back in the dark ages of my career and I hated it, mainly because the man was a buffoon.

Fast forward to today. I'm still not great at handling my personal stress (I'm working on it!). I hate giving up my tasks and I'm a control-freak perfectionist. Any tips on how to manage people?

Is it funny to you to take one of those day long seminars on managing people?

ETA; Not funny - LOL but funny, they're a waste of time.

Slainte!

  • I think being clear about your expectations and timelines really helps to avoid micromanaging.

    I hate being micromanaged, I definitely don't want to be a micro-manager.

  • start with little, not easily messed up tasks and work your way up as your trust grows in your assistant and as they get a better understanding of what they are doing. No need to give them complex tasks on day one, kwim?

  • I don't manage anyone, but I felt similarly when training my maternity leave replacement (who stayed on and we now split the job).

My big tips are to evaluate strongly for personality and work style when interviewing (hard skills are important, but being able to work well with someone is more rare), and to remind yourself that perfection is the enemy of completion and your way isn't necessarily the right way.

Like when MrP fills the dishwasher differently than I do - take a step back. Is this task finished? Will it accomplish what it needs to?
