Calories: how low is too low?

I'm currently 5'10 and 162. My comfort level for my body is about 145. It says that I need approx 2000 calories to maintain my weight and I'm thinking of cutting to 1400 with 30-45 minutes of cardio 6 days a week. I don't want to go into "starvation mode" and am wondering how low is too low. Also, I tend to keep my carbs about 100g per day and it's from fruits/veg/whole grains. Thanks in advance.

  • Wait, so you want to calorie restrict AND do frequent exercise once you're at your goal weight? I have a hard time imagining that your body will operate very well under such chronic stress. 

    What is wrong with the 2000 calories and frequent exercise? As long as your weight stays stable. 

  • No, I'm current 161 and want to get to 145 (my goal weight). Sorry if I wasn't clear.

  • From someone who used to eat 100 calories a day, I would assume it's fine. But I'm no expert.

  • I would aim for 1600 or so calories a day.  You don't want to go below 1600 net calories a day.  Assuming that you are burning 300 - 400 calories working out 1400 total would net our to 1000 -1100 calories.

    I would also sub strength training for cardio a couple days a week. 

  • First, do you currently track your calories?  If not, start there.

    You need to cut out 500 a day to lose 1 lb a week, so I'd go with 1500 instead of 1400.

    Also, that's net calories, so you need to track your exercise calories and eat those back, so if you don't have a heart rate monitor, I'd get one because that's going to help a lot.
