Re silk, level with me

Ann Taylor Petite Silk Camp Shirt

Does it realllly need to be dry-cleaned? The Ann Taylor blouse that I just bought and wore for the first time today says to dry clean. I am not a fan of dry-cleaning and wondering if I could get away with hand washing with a laundry detergent I use for delicates. All the other silk items I own I hand wash. But I also don't want to ruin my new blouse since I lo-ove it.

Dry-clean as directed or hand wash?

Re: Re silk, level with me

  • I would just dryell it. I'd tell you to hand wash but I don't want the responsibility. ;)

  • I don't see why you couldn't hand wash it... if it's silk it shouldn't get ruined just like other silk garments, no?
  • We wash unstructured silk at our house. So no pants/shorts, but shirts and blouses. There is some shrinkage on the stuff that isn't labeled washable, tho.
  • I agree with PP to Dryel your blouse. I once ruined a silk blouse just by washing it (not drying it). I was so sad and still miss that blouse. I wouldn't take any chances.
  • Are you sure it's actually silk? They use a lot of poly these days.
  • It depends on the silk and how it was treated. I've taken a Nicole Miller 100% silk dress into the ocean... and, because of that, dropped it in the hotel tub with Tide. It came out perfectly. It did not shrink or wrinkle. I've also been very careful with silk clothes... hand washed in cold with a capful of Woolite... with mixed results. Ann Taylor and BR 100% silk blouses did not fare well. I remember one that I put in cold water. It immediately started to shrivel. It looked like when a kid swims for hours and their fingertips get wrinkly.

With your shirt, I would not risk it.

  • If you really like the blouse DC it. The amount of seams and details of that blouse are not going to tolerate shrinkage, you are going to risk puckering.
  • Silk that has not been finished can be washed.  Silk that has been finished with a treatment to enhance the sheen will spot when washed.
  • Personally, I will always dry clean.  I had two items ruined because I thought I could hand wash.  One was a silk knit top and the other was a dress with silk trim.  Both were black and both came out very faded looking, even though I hand washed cold with woolite made for colors.
