Whats your opinion (sports related)

The University I attended has a great Play-off division football team. We win...a lot. We got a new coach after the old coach moved up a division.

This year the football players have gotten in to some serious crap. Gang rape allegations, assaults, DUI''s, a tasing incident, the whole 9 yards. With the new coach, discipline was seriously lacking. Both on and off the field (obviously)

The quarterback was accused of (recently) raping a girl. He was with held from spring practice for 2 days, but then was on the field, then the coach was quoted saying "He's such a great leader, etc." It came across mocking to say the least.

The next day the coach was fired (he just finished his second year) as well as the Athletic Director by our newish President.

The whole state (yes, state, we're small remember :) ) is up in arms. Calling for the Presidents head as well. They also think that the coach and the AD shouldn't get blamed for what the students are doing.

There's more the story (google University of Montana). This is the bare bones.

But what do you think? Are coaches responsible for their student athletes off the field. Is the University/President?

Re: Whats your opinion (sports related)

  • My opinion? Yes, the coach is responsible, maybe not in the sense of they are supposed to keep track of every athlete, but putting a code in place to where if something does happen, there are consequences.

I know everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but there should be a punishment if you are associated with the team and you bring negative press. I understand to some that winning is everything, but if your athletes know that there are serious consequences for dragging the team through the mud, your athletes would know that they need to remove themselves from potentially bad situations.

A quarter suspension (yeah...a QUARTER) doesn't prove crap to a cocky 20 year old.

Student athletes have more on their shoulders than other students, I get that. But they do need to be held in a higher standard. As do the coaches. As does the director that hired the coaches.

  • If there's only one isolated incident, I think most people would say that the accused party is responsible, and as long as the situation is properly handled within the team, then that's as far as it should go.

But this sounds like there are numerous incidents on this team, to the point where a culture of misbehavior and irresponsibility has been established.  Obviously, things aren't be handled or addressed properly, which only leads to more problems.  It probably is a good thing to clean the coaching house in this case.

And it has been bringing bad publicity to the whole university, not just the team.  As big as collegiate football is in this country, often the perception of the school is derived from that because it is the most visible part.  If the president or other powers that be have been aware of these issues, but also haven't taken steps to make it better, then I can also understand wanting to address that as well.

That may make no sense at all, but I agree with you.  I think.
